Sigma 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN Contemporary Lens for Sony, Leica, Panasonic, and Sigma Cameras

With the new 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN Contemporary lens, Sigma is expanding its product range for mirrorless full-frame cameras with L-mount (Leica, Panasonic, and Sigma cameras) and with E-mount (Sony) to include another high-light standard zoom. The new Sigma 28-70mm F2.8 is a more compact and lighter alternative to the 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN Art lens.

The new lens was also developed exclusively for mirrorless cameras and is compatible with models with image sensors in full-frame format. It is based on the design of Signa’s Art line of products and is said to offer the same optical performance. It was specifically designed as a lightweight and compact lens, making it ideal for everyday use. In addition, according to Sigma, it should offer excellent workmanship with attention to detail and thus ensure an exceptional user experience.

A new standard for high-speed zoom lenses for mirrorless cameras
The Sigma 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN Contemporary lens for mirrorless cameras combines – according to the manufacturer – outstanding optical performance and a continuous aperture of 1:2.8 in a light and compact housing. In terms of design, the new wide lens is based on the 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN Art, but with a focal length range from 28mm. Thanks to the latter, the lens housing could be significantly smaller at around 7 x 10 cm and the same at 470 (instead of 835 g) and this with the same high optical performance. The new zoom is the smallest and lightest lens in its class – according to research by Sigma in February 2021 – for standard zooms with a continuous light intensity of 1: 2.8 over the entire focal length range, which is designed for mirrorless full-frame cameras.

Overall, this new lens follows the core concept of the Contemporary product line of achieving an optimal balance between optical performance and lens size. According to Sigma, the new zoom delivers professional quality in such a compact housing that the zoom can be taken to any occasion.

In addition to the anti-ghosting design, the super-multi-layer and nano-porous coatings ensure the well-controlled scattered light formation and thus high-contrast results even with backlight. The front of the lens has a water and oil repellent coating.

The new lens has a single, lightweight focusing element so that the AF unit can also be kept small. Together with a quiet and fast stepper motor, this ensures a responsive and almost noiseless autofocus performance.
