Sigma has announced a new universal high-aperture zoom lens for full-frame mirrorless cameras: the Sigma 28-105mm F2.8 DG DN. This lens features an advanced optical design, a minimum focusing distance of 40 cm across the entire focal range, a protected body, and minimal focus breathing. Designed specifically for Sony E and L-mount systems, it represents a unique offering in Sigma’s lineup, with potential competition emerging in the future.
Sigma highlights that the lens delivers excellent image quality across its entire focal length range, boasting a 3.75x zoom ratio compared to the standard 2.9x of 24-70mm lenses. The lens employs an advanced optical design that includes FLD lenses (similar to fluorite, offering ultra-low refractive indices), SLD lenses (with ultra-low dispersion), and five aspherical elements.
The lens also offers impressive macro capabilities, with a minimum focusing distance of 40 cm (measured from the camera sensor) and a magnification ratio 1:3.1 at a 105 mm focal length.
Video Capabilities
Sigma’s new lens is designed with videographers in mind, offering a wide, constant maximum aperture and a broad focal length range. The design minimizes focus breathing across all focal lengths, enhancing video shooting versatility. Despite extending by only a third of its total length, the lens remains relatively compact and lightweight at 995 grams (L-mount version), making it suitable for handheld shooting over extended periods. Using magnesium alloys in the construction contributes to its lightness and balanced handling, positioning it as a competitive alternative to standard 24-70mm zoom lenses.
Autofocus and Control
The lens features a fast autofocus system and three control rings, including one for manual focus adjustment. It also includes a diaphragm control ring, which can be adjusted with clicks or smoothly turned, catering to both photography and videography needs. A diaphragm lock switch is also present, allowing users to fix the aperture value to prevent accidental changes.
Additionally, the lens is equipped with two customizable AFL buttons, conveniently located on the side and top of the barrel for easy access in both horizontal and vertical shooting positions. A zoom lock switch prevents the zoom ring from extending under its weight at the wide end, which can be disengaged via the switch or by rotating the zoom ring.
The lens features a sealed housing that protects against dirt and harsh weather. Moreover, the front element is coated to repel water and oil. Additionally, the Sigma 28-105mm F/2.8 DG DN is available for pre-order on Bhphotovideo.com and Adorama.com for $1,499.
