Samsung 870 EVO SSD With Up To 4TB Capacity

Samsung announced the appearance of its solid state drive of the 870 EVO family: solutions are suitable for use in desktops and laptops.

The Samsung Evo 870 is made in a 2.5-inch format with dimensions of 100 × 69.85 × 6.8 mm. The microchips of flash memory Samsung V-NAND MLC and the controller Samsung MKX are used.

The SATA 3.0 interface is used to connect to a computer, providing a bandwidth of up to 6 Gb/s. The speed of sequential reading reaches 560 MB/s, the speed of sequential writing is 530 MB/s.

The insides of the Samsung SSD 870 Evo is a very compact board with a chipset – a controller, LPDDR4 buffer memory, and 128-layer flash memory with three-bit cells. The most curious thing is that the entire flash memory fits into just one chip.

The secret lies in the use of 512 Gigabit TLC 3D NAND dies, which are stacked 16 pieces in one package. It is worth recalling that in the recently released Samsung 980 PRO, such memory is used in the form of 256-gigabit crystals, but a high degree of parallelism of the flash memory array is not needed for a SATA drive, therefore, it is quite acceptable to use NAND crystals with twice the capacity. As a result, in the terabyte 870 EVO, the eight-channel MKX controller works with 2x, rather than the 4x, interleaving that we are used to with NVMe SSDs of similar capacity.
