Samsung Galaxy Buds2 Pro Hands-On: Improved sound quality, ANC, 29-hour battery

Besides the new generation Galaxy Z Fold4 (Hands-on) and Z Flip4 (Hands-on) product lines, as well as the Galaxy Watch5 series (Hands-on), Samsung also introduced new True wireless Bluetooth earbuds at the Unpacked event held on August 10. Galaxy Buds2 Pro owns a design language that is too familiar to Samsung Galaxy users. The appearance of Buds2 Pro looks like a hybrid between Galaxy Buds Pro (REVIEW) and Galaxy Buds2 (REVIEW). The entire charging box is designed in a matte plastic form, limiting sweat and fingerprints, and also feels relatively comfortable to hold.

The charging case of the Galaxy Buds2 Pro has a square design, weighing 43.4 grams for the charging case and an additional 5.5 grams for each earpiece. With this compact size, users can fit it anywhere, from the pocket, bag, or backpack.

Like previous generations of Galaxy Buds, Galaxy Buds2 Pro also uses an in-ear headphone design, no earlobes, and the housing is designed to be large to place components and batteries. The Bluetooth ear buds come with different-sized ear tips for users to customize according to the size of their ears.

In terms of wear comfort, Galaxy Buds2 Pro for a comfortable wearing experience. Although the design is almost unchanged, the housing of the headset is designed to be more rounded, thereby giving a more “ergonomic” and “aerodynamic” experience.

The Samsung Galaxy Buds2 Pro looks quite similar to the older Galaxy Buds Pro apart from the matte finish of the housing and the position of the microphones. However, the earphones are about 15 percent smaller, which should make them more comfortable to wear. A lot is happening technically, starting with active noise cancellation (ANC), which now should work even more effectively.

Human voices are automatically detected, which switches the earbuds into transparency mode, allowing conversations without having to take the TWS out of your ears. But the most exciting new feature is Samsung Seamless Codec HiFi, a brand new Bluetooth codec that is said to transmit sound in Hi-Fi quality with 24-bit via Bluetooth 5.3. According to Samsung, this codec is compatible with all Galaxy devices running One UI 4.0 or later. All other devices have to switch to SBC or AAC, LC3 is not supported.

Besides, Galaxy Buds2 Pro also supports cinematic 360-degree surround sound. Supported technologies include 5.1, 7.1, and Dolby Atmos, allowing for the same sound experience as when listening live.

As the Pro version, the Galaxy Buds2 Pro is equipped with intelligent active noise cancellation (ANC) mode. The headset comes with 3 High SNR recording microphones system, as well as equipped with a clear screen size 2 times larger than the predecessor, thereby improving noise resistance by up to 40%. Of course, the headset also has a crosstalk mode that allows listening to environmental sounds, especially being able to automatically switch between ANC and Ambient when detecting the wearer’s voice.

In terms of battery life, Samsung says that the Galaxy Buds2 Pro has a 61mAh battery for each earpiece and 515mAh for the charging case, which can provide 5 hours of continuous music play if ANC is on or 8 hours of music playback when ANC is off. Up to 29 hours with the included charging case. This is the improved battery usage compared to its predecessor.
