The manufacturer of memories for PC Patriot announced the availability of its Supersonic Rage Prime USB series, composed of a USB 3.2 Gen 2 flash drive from 250 GB to 1 TB. These drives have the particularity of offering read rates of up to 600 MB/s to better utilize the wider bandwidth of USB 3.0 or 3.2 ports.
Sequential read and write rates approach those of standard SATA III SSDs, all in a USB drive that’s only a fraction of its size. However, it is difficult to know how to maintain such high-performance rates over long periods of time.
The capless design is a huge plus point as it means you won’t have to worry about losing a removable cap every time you want to use the drive. The keyring buckle can also prove invaluable when traveling.
However, actual performance varies. Patriot Supersonic Rage Prime USB3.2 Gen 2 dongle will perform well and will get write rates close to 500MB/s or more for sure. The problem arises when trying to maintain this fast performance over long periods of time.
Transfer rates initially quite good, at around 500MB/s in actual tests. However, after just a few minutes, transfer rates dropped to a more stable level of 220MB/s, less than half of the original maximum rate.
It’s still fast, of course, especially if you only plan to move a few large files at a time. Still, owners shouldn’t expect it to perform at full capacity after just a few minutes of heavy use.
