Panasonic has announced a new wide angle lens for full-frame L-mount cameras. The Panasonic Lumix S 35mm f1.8 is the fourth lens in the company’s new lineup with an f/1.8 aperture (previously 85mm, 50mm, and 24mm f/1.8 were introduced). All controls for the four prime lenses are the same size and position.
The optical design of the new wide lens consists of eleven elements, divided into nine groups, including three aspherical elements and three ED (Extra-Low Dispersion) elements. ED elements are used to effectively suppress chromatic aberration. There is a 9-blade diaphragm.
Panasonic claims that the autofocus lens can operate smoothly and silently even at a maximum of 240fps (the mode is available in newer Panasonic cameras). For non-linear adjustment, the focus is shifted by a variable amount following the speed of rotation of the focus ring.
You can adjust the preset amount of rotation and sensitivity. You can select the amount of focus shift per ring rotation, from 90 to 360 degrees by 30 degrees, to ensure that the intended focusing operation is performed. In terms of video, Panasonic claims that the “focus breathing” effect is suppressed in this lens.
The lens also features micro-step aperture control for smoother exposure changes. The new lens from Panasonic is compact in size and lightweight at 295 grams. The case is dustproof/splashproof and can withstand use in harsh environments even at 10 degrees below zero for high mobility.
Price and availability
The new Panasonic Lumix S 35mm f1.8 lens is now available to pre-order via the Bhphotovideo.com and Adorama.com websites for $697.99. It will be available at the end of November.
