Nikon unviels NIKKOR Z 400mm F2.8 TC VR S Telephoto Lens

Nikon has officially unveiled the NIKKOR Z 400mm F2.8 TC VR S super-telephoto prime lens for Nikon full-frame mirrorless (FX-format) Z-mount cameras.

Nikon NIKKOR Z 400mm F2.8 TC VR S Telephoto Lens

The NIKKOR Z 400mm F2.8 TC VR S is a highly detailed S lens with excellent resolution that minimizes color blur. It is compact, lightweight, and highly portable for a super Nikon telephoto lens. Thanks to its detail and mobility, this lens will suit many photographers – from experienced amateurs to professionals.

The most obvious new feature of this Nikkor lens is the built-in teleconverter, which increases the effective focal length of the new lens to 560mm by reducing the maximum aperture to F/4. Other improvements include a 20% weight reduction (2950g) over the old AF-S and vibration reduction of up to 5.5EV, which increases to ~6EV when the new lens is paired with the flagship Nikon Z 9.

Other features include the use of a “voice coil” autofocus motor pioneered in Nikon 1 Series lenses. Nikon calls this motor the “Silky Swift Voice Coil Motor” and promises it will deliver fast quiet, and very smooth autofocus. This is facilitated by a new guide mechanism and a built-in “ABS” encoder, which provides an accurate measurement of the position of the focusing elements. Voice coil motors (VCMs) autofocus using a powerful magnetic field.

Meanwhile, the Z 400mm F2.8 TC VR S is debuting a brand new coating on various elements. Nikon claims that Meso Amorphous Coat provides the best anti-reflective coating of any coating in Nikon’s history and should outperform the competition when it comes to flare and ghosting resistance.

The Nikon telephoto lens consists of 25 elements in 19 groups and includes two ED glass elements, one super-low dispersion glass element, two fluorite elements, and an SR (short-wavelength refraction) element that refracts blue rays more than red and green to eliminate chromatic aberrations.

Nikon Nikkor Z 400mm F2.8 TC VR S price and availability

The Nikon Nikkor Z 400mm F2.8 TC VR S super-telephoto prime lens will be available in late February and is already available to pre-order through the Bhphotovideo.com and Adorama.com stores for an MSRP of $13,996.95.
