Apple has officially unveiled the next-generation new MacBook 2021. According to Apple’s marketing, the notebook promises impressive performance thanks to the Apple M1 Pro and M1 Max, high-quality mini LED display, excellent battery life, and the best speakers that Apple has ever built into a notebook.
The heart of the new MacBook Pro 2021 is Apple’s new chips: the Apple M1 Pro and the M1 Max. Both chips offer 70 percent faster processor performance than the Apple M1. For this purpose, Apple relies on a combination of eight performance cores and two efficiency cores, which should ensure better battery life. The Apple M1 Pro comes with up to 32 GB LPDDR5 memory at a bandwidth of 200 GB/s, and the M1 Max can even be combined with up to 64 GB RAM with an impressive bandwidth of 400 GB/s.
Probably the biggest difference between the two chips is the integrated graphics chip. The Apple M1 Pro comes with a GPU with 16 processing units, which should offer twice the graphics performance compared to the Apple M1, the M1 Max even offers 32 cores for four times the performance. According to Apple, the M1 Max can compete with dedicated high-end graphics chips. Two large fans should transport 50% more air than in the previous model, but still rotate at a slower speed and thus run more quietly.
The SSD is also being upgraded – it now reaches a speed of up to 7.4 GB/s. Despite this immense performance, the battery should last significantly longer. Apple promises that the 14-inch MacBook Pro will manage 17 hours of video playback on one charge, and the 16-inch MacBook Pro will even last 21 hours.
Another highlight of the new MacBook Pro is the 120 Hz ProMotion display, which Apple markets as the “Liquid Retina XDR Display”. The frame rate adapts automatically to the screen content. A mini LED backlight with thousands of LEDs enables a brightness of up to 1,000 nits on the entire screen or a peak brightness of 1,600 nits when displaying HDR content. Both displays also offer a higher resolution and a larger diagonal of 14.2 “and 16.2” respectively.
One of the most controversial features of the new MacBook Pro 2021 is the notch. It used to reduce the screen edges on three sides to 3.5 millimeters, and at the same time to improve the webcam by installing a larger sensor that offers 1080p resolution and twice as high a light intensity. Apple installed a total of six speakers, namely four woofers, which are supposed to create 80 percent more bass than the previous model, and two larger tweeters, including support for spatial audio. The microphones should offer “studio quality”.
The new MacBook Pro 2021 comes with significantly more ports than its predecessor – three Thunderbolt ports (USB-C) are now standard equipment as well as an SD card reader, a headphone jack, and a MagSafe charger. With the M1 Pro, it is possible to connect up to two 6K displays, the M1 Max even supports three 6K displays and an additional 4K display.
