New Firmware Updates for some Recent Sony Mirrorless Cameras and Lenses

In the past few days, Sony has announced a series of large and small firmware updates for its mirrorless cameras as well as some of its E-mount lenses. In new updates, we have some new updates for the latest Sony mirrorless A7R III as well as the professional A9, in parallel, the A7R II and two 70-200 and 100-400 lenses also have some updates to make the machine work better. 1. Note for macOS 10.13 (High Sierra) users

If you use the Mac to update the firmware and especially the System Software Updater does not support macOS 10.13 (High Sierra), you need to download “DriverLoader_1013” from this website and run it on your computer first.

  • You can update the camera by downloading and running Driver Loader Ver. 10.13 for MAC OS X.
  • You must run “DriverLoader_1013” before running the System Software Updater.
  • If you have MacOS 10.12 or earlier, you do not need to install “DriverLoader_1013”.

2. Firmware update for Sony A7R III

  • Solves cases where the ‘Set File Name’ function does not work properly
  • Improves overall camera stability

3. Firmware update for Sony A9

  • Improves image quality and overall stability of the camera
  • Adds support for the Eye AF function for A-mount lenses using the LA-EA3 adapter
  • Improves continuous auto focus performance when zooming using a SEL70200GM or SEL100400GM lens
  • Resolves a condition where RAW files disappear when SDX/microSDXC memory cards are connected to certain smartphones

4. Firmware update for Sony A7R II

  • Adds the Auto Pwr OFF Temp function
  • Improves operation of the camera:
    1. Improves camera operation when the AF area is set to flexible spot
    2. Adds Live View Display into custom button assignment
    3. Adds the Set File Name function
  • Supports visible light LED with external flash for AF (HVL-F45RM External Flash)
  • Improves release time lag when wireless flash is used
  • Optimizes exposure algorithm during focusing when Live View Display is set for Setting Effect OFF
  • Improves image quality when Long Exposure NR setting is OFF
  • Improves overall stability of the camera

5. Firmware update for Sony FE 70-200mm F2.8 lens GM OSS

  • Improves the accuracy of the contrast AF at distant shooting, making it easier to focus when the aperture is narrowed down to F11 or higher.
  • The lens must be attached to an E-mount body camera to perform this update. The NEX-5, NEX-3, NEX-C3, NEX-VG10, and PXW-FS7 model cameras cannot be used.

6. Firmware update for Sony FE 100-400mm lens F4.5-5.6 GM OSS

  • Improves AF-C (continuous AF) performance for zooming when attached to an ILCE-9 camera
  • The lens must be attached to an E-mount body camera to perform this update. The NEX-5, NEX-3, NEX-C3, NEX-VG10, and PXW-FS7 model cameras cannot be used.
