Canon USA has announced a new software update for the EOS R on its website (from $1,799 on Bhphotovideo and on Amazon). However, this new firmware cannot simply be downloaded and installed by yourself, instead, the camera must be sent to the manufacturer, the upgrade service costs $100, plus shipping costs.

Above all, you get a better Live View resolution for this effort. If the camera is connected to a computer via USB, the image can be seen on the monitor after the update with 1,920 x 1,280 pixels, with the standard software only 960 x 640 pixels are possible. In addition, the update enables focus peaking, which overlays the sharp area in the photo with a color, so that users should be able to focus faster and more precisely.

However, the update also deactivates video output via HDMI, so customers have to consider which feature is more important to them. The update is aimed primarily at users who mainly produce Stop Motion Animation. The Dragonframe software already works with the new firmware. Dragonframe explains the advantages of the new firmware in detail in a video as well.
