Nobody expected that. Peavey brings out a new digital mixer that focuses on live use. Isn’t it a bit late, and what new features does Aureus mixing console offer?
A good name actually! Sounds somehow handy and classy. When looking at the audio console, the first thing that catches the eye is the 10-inch touch display. The manufacturer promises us access to all important controls with just a few multi-touch movements. And if that’s not enough for you, you can even position a tablet for monitoring on the additional shelf “on top”. Cool!
28 input and 14 output channels, eight buses, two main outputs and four DCA (Digitally Controlled Amplifier) are in this channel mixer. In addition to 16 XLR combo inputs, USB and Bluetooth are also available for incoming signals. On the output side, you have access to 10 XLR, two RCA, and six digital outputs (USB and AES).
Nine motorized 100 mm faders, eight aux sends and a total of 45 backlit buttons take care of the operation. In addition to the touchscreen and a tablet, Aureus can also be remotely controlled via Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Operation is even possible via an HTML5-compatible browser. Up to 10 devices control parameters at the same time – the individual mix for all people in the band is therefore no problem.
23 internal effects are divided between two engines. With a fully parametric 5-band EQ, you have the frequencies under control. On the touch display, you can organize EQ and effects as well as the settings for compressor, gate, or even scenes and shows. You save settings as presets, as well as a whole mix.
The mixing console is just 38 cm wide, not quite 50 cm deep – theoretically you can build Aureus in a rack. Dimensions and equipment suggest that this sound mix device is primarily suitable for gigs and installations in youth centers, churches, smaller clubs, and comparable venues.
The competitors in this segment are not to be underestimated, We are thinking specifically of the Tascam Model 12. Is Peavey coming a little late with the digital mixer around the corner? Audio networking is completely absent here, but it may not be essential in every situation. However, the competition is also damn well positioned in terms of price. Still: Kudos to Peavey! Not every manufacturer probably comes up with the idea of introducing a live mixer.
