As expected, new AMD Ryzen 5000 series CPU models are now available to pre-order on B&H and Newegg online stores. First, let’s evaluate the characteristics of the new AMD 5000 series CPU:
As you can see, the number of cores and TDP remained unchanged, while the frequencies increased slightly, and prices increased by $50 in all four Ryzen 5000 CPU models.
The new AMD Ryzen 5000 series is based on the Zen 3 architecture, which itself provides a 19% increase in instruction execution rate (IPC). And that’s the biggest generation-to-generation gain since the first Ryzen launched. Add the frequency boost to this and you get a very impressive performance boost. For example, in Cinebench R20 in single-threaded mode, Ryzen 9 5900X scores 631 points, and Ryzen 9 3900X is about 510 points! That is, the increase is about 24%. By the way, the Ryzen 9 5900X is the first processor to score over 600 points in this test, while the Ryzen 9 5950X got 640 points.
Of course, such an increase will not be everywhere. As you can see, in some applications it does not exceed 10%. Comparison with the Core i9-10900K in the case of new AMD 5000 CPU products is justified by the fact that there is nothing more to compare it with, but the Ryzen 9 5950X is, of course, much more expensive. But with the Ryzen 9 5900X, Intel’s current flagship is exactly the same price. Of course, the new AMD will be faster, because even the Ryzen 9 3900X often left the competitor far behind.
However, in the new generation, AMD decided to focus not only on performance in general but also on gaming performance – Intel’s “last stronghold”. And if AMD is to be believed, that stronghold has fallen, as the new Ryzen 5000 are faster. Of course, comparing modern processors with a large number of cores in games is not the most rewarding task, but an increase of more than 20% in some projects is impressive. This is already akin to replacing a video card.
You can also note the modified eight-core CCX module with a shared third-level cache memory of 32 MB. In addition, AMD has not presented any new set of system logic – the new CPUs will work with the 500 series chipsets. Moreover, all new items, except for the younger one, will not be equipped with coolers.
In general, hardly anyone doubted that the new AMD CPUs would be very interesting because even Intel could not fully answer the Ryzen 3000 series. Now the advantage of the “red” will become much more obvious, and the competitor will try to give an answer only at the end of the first quarter of 2021 – than the desktop CPUs Rocket Lake will be released.
