Moog Werkstatt-01: An inexpensive Craft Synthesizer is Coming Back!

Moog brings the Werkstatt-01 back! The affordable Craft synthesizer popular with modders and circuit benders comes this time with the formerly optional CV expander. A great Christmas present for Moog synthesizer fans!

Moog Werkstatt-01 Craft Synthesizer

Like the DFAM and the Subharmonicon, the Moog Werkstatt-01 began as a DIY project at the Moogfest. In this case, it was visitors to the festival in 2014 who were able to assemble the analog synthesizer themselves under expert guidance. In response to popular requests, Moog later brought out the Werkstatt-01 as a regular product.

In the series version, you no longer had to solder any components, just install the prefabricated circuit board in the housing, which is why purists will note that the Werkstatt-01 is not a real DIY kit in the actual sense. But that didn’t prevent the small synthesizer from becoming a very popular object for various modifications and circuit-bending experiments – exactly as Moog had intended. The last but not least, the price was decisive for the success, because the Werkstatt-01 was by far the cheapest way to get an analog synthesizer from Moog when it was released.

Moog Werkstatt-01 Edition with CV Expander

So now there should be a new edition, which will please everyone who could not get a Werkstatt-01 at the time. Nothing has changed in terms of sound generation, the influence of which can also be seen in the later Mother-32. The Werkstatt-01 offers a VCO with PWM that can be switched between sawtooth and square, an LFO with triangular and square waves, an ADSR envelope, a VCA, and of course the Moog ladder filter. A small patch panel enables additional modulations to be connected using patch cables typical of breadboards. Incidentally, the Werkstatt-01 was the initial spark for the many semi-modular synthesizers that Moog released in the following years.

It’s now the year 2020 and modular synthesizers are no longer exotic, but ubiquitous, to which Moog has made a decisive contribution to the Mother series. That is why the manufacturer includes the new edition of the synthesizer with the CV expander, which was originally an optional extension. The circuit board is plugged into the patch panel and offers 12 mini-jack sockets for easy connection to Eurorack systems and other synthesizers.

Price and availability

The new edition of the Moog Werkstatt-01 is now available to pre-order at Bhphotovideo.com for $399.

According to Moog, the remake will only be available for a limited time. So if you want to have the inexpensive craft synthesizer, you should hurry up. And if you are still looking for a great Christmas present for a synthesizer fan, you should be very happy about this news.

Earlier this year, Moog audio has introduced the Semi-Modular Polyrhythmic Analog Synthesizer named Moog Subharmonicon. This new Synthesizer is designed upon the success of the Mother 32 and DFAM semi-modular synthesizers, and Eurorack-compatible too.
