Apple MacBook Pro 2023 with M2 Max and M2 Pro and up to 22 hours of runtime

Apple introduced the brand new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro 2023. The 120 Hz fast, 1,600 nits bright mini LED display is now optionally combined with an Apple M2 Pro or an M2 Max, with Thunderbolt 4 and Wi-Fi 6E.

Apple announced the next-generation new MacBook Pro 2023. Both the 14-inch and the 16-inch models look exactly like the direct predecessor model, and technically many components have also been adopted, including the 120 Hz mini-LED displays with a peak brightness of 1,600 nits.

The 1,080p webcam sits in a notch as before, the case is again in space gray or silver, and the huge Force Touch trackpad and the illuminated keyboard with large function keys are retained. The big innovations are the Apple M2 Pro and the Apple M2 Max. The Apple M2 Pro 2023 offers a maximum of eight performance and four efficiency cores, i.e. two small cores more than the M1 Pro. In addition, Apple installed a graphics chip with 19 computing units, three more than before. In the basic model, however, the chip only offers six P and four E cores and 16 GPU cores.

The Apple M2 Max also has eight performance and four efficiency cores, but also up to 38 GPU cores instead of the maximum 32 of the Apple M1 Max. Apple promises that both the Apple M2 Pro and the M2 Max each offer 20 percent more processing power and up to 30 percent more graphics performance than their direct predecessors. The memory is in turn used as graphics memory, memory bandwidth remains at 200 GB/s on the Pro chip, and at 400 GB/s on the Max, the maximum memory configuration increases from 64 GB to 96 GB RAM. Apple also installs up to 8 GB of SSD storage.

The additional efficiency cores also contribute to a longer battery life – according to Apple, the 14-inch MacBook Pro achieves 18 hours when watching videos and at least 12 hours when surfing the web, and the 16-inch model even reaches 22 and 15 hours respectively. However, since the Apple M2 does not always work more efficiently than the Apple M1, the actual runtime should depend heavily on usage.

Apple sticks with the same port selection, including HDMI, three USB-Cs, MagSafe 3, an SDXC card reader, and a headphone jack. What’s new is that the three USB-C ports officially support Thunderbolt 4, instead of just USB 4 and Thunderbolt 3. The new MacBook Pros are also Apple’s first laptops to support Wi-Fi 6E.

The 14-inch MacBook Pro with Apple M2 Pro, 16 GB RAM, and 512 GB SSD costs $1,999, and the 16-inch model with M2 Pro and the same memory equipment costs $ 2,499. A model with M2 Max, 32 GB RAM, and 1 TB SSD will cost $3,099.

Back in October, Apple introduced the new 11-inch and 12.9-inch M2 iPad Pro, which will receive two surprising upgrades alongside the Apple M2: Wi-Fi 6E and a hover functionality for the second-generation Apple Pencil, which makes working with the stylus much easier to make it more comfortable.
