The latest Lumix S 18-40mm f4.5-6.3 zoom lens from Panasonic is not only particularly compact but also comparatively wide-angle. The full-frame lens covers a focal length range of 18-40 mm, making it perfect for everyday situations, landscapes, and street photography.
The new Panasonic Lumix S 18-40mm f4.5-6.3 lens has a key advantage over previous Lumix zoom lenses: its compact size. It measures only 67.9 millimeters in diameter, 40.9 millimeters in length, and weighs just 155 grams.
This makes the lens ideal for the particularly compact Lumix S9 full-format camera, as the combination of camera and lens weighs just 641 grams. According to Panasonic, this is the smallest and lightest full-format zoom lens with autofocus. The lens is protected against water splashes, frost down to -10 °C and dust. The front lens has a coating that is designed to repel dirt.
The focal length is also unusual. At 18mm, the zoom lens rivals many ultra-wide-angle prime lenses, although the 40mm at the longer end is a compromise for compact dimensions. The relatively small maximum aperture—f/4.5 or f/6.3, depending on the focal length—is another trade-off.
The 15 cm close-up limit provides maximum flexibility. The lens uses a construction with eight lenses in seven groups, including three lenses with an aspherical surface, two ED lenses, and a UHR element.

The new Panasonic zoom lens is now available for pre-order on Bhphotovideo.com and Adorama.com, with an expected release date of October 22. The recommended retail price is $497.99.
The lens is available as a kit with the Lumix S9 for $2,199.99 on B&H Photo and Adorama. The Lumix S9 now also comes in two new colors: Mint Green and Pink.
