During the press conference at CES 2021, LG did not give many details about the new QNED TV series. But now new LG mini LED TV price and other details have come thanks to the official product listing that appeared on the B&H photo store. For now, we are talking about LG QNED99 and QNED90 mini LED TV models.
What is a QNED and how does it work? Behind this acronym are LCD televisions equipped with a Mini LED backlight and characterized by the simultaneous use of mini LED Quantum Dot and NanoCell technologies, both developed to improve color fidelity. The combined action is called Quantum NanoCell. The backlight is of the Full LED Array type with local dimming, the most advanced and here enhanced by the presence of the Mini LEDs.
Using these tiny diodes you can significantly increase the number of LEDs placed behind the mini LED ultrawide panel; the main benefits (obviously on paper, it will then be necessary to evaluate the implementation on each model) are two: a more uniform backlight (due to the greater number of LEDs) and a more refined control obtained by increasing the independent control zones.
At the moment we do not have precise data on the number of Mini LEDs and local dimming. In LG QNED99 we find about 30,000 Mini LEDs and about 2,000 control zones. The numbers tend to drop on smaller sizes and down from the top of the range towards the lower-end series.
The QNED99 series LG LED TV consists of three models of 65″, 75″ and 86″ with 8K resolution. The refresh rate is at 100/120 Hz and there is the Alpha 9 Gen4 AI Processor 8K, the most performing electronics among those made by the Korean giant that here is specifically optimized for 8K resolution.
The functions offered are AI Picture Pro, AI Sound Pro, and Game Optimizer. LG QNED99 supports HDR10, HLG, Dolby Vision, Dolby Vision IQ, HGiG (HDR Gaming Interest Group, a sort of standard developed to ensure the correct implementation of HDR in all video games) as well as audio in Dolby Atmos format. The HDMI 2.1 inputs are four and allow you to use 8K sources at 60 Hz and Ultra HD at 120 Hz, eARC, Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM), and Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) in HDMI Forum VRR version or the NVIDIA G-SYNC and FreeSync Premium. The mini LED screen TV is completed by the Smart TV features based on webOS 6.0 with support for cloud gaming.
The LG QNED90 mini LED display shares most of the aforementioned characteristics but with some significant differences. First of all, the mini LED panel is Ultra HD from 65″, 75″ and 86″ at 100/120 Hz. Although they have a Mini LED backlight (always Full LED).
The processor also changes: Alpha 9 Gen4 AI Processor 8K gives way to Alpha 7 Gen4 AI Processor 4K. The available processing is similar to those present on the QNED99 but in a less advanced version: we find for example AI Picture and AI Sound in non-Pro mode. The LG Smart TV and the functions are the same. However, the number of HDMI 2.1 capable of handling 120 Hz in Ultra HD, ALLM, VRR, and eARC (all confirmed) should be confirmed.
