LG G3 OLED Smart TVs featured improved user interfaces and up to 70% brighter screens

LG introduced a new Smart TV 4K OLED for 2023. The new LG G3 OLED Smart TV series rely on the α9 Gen6 4K AI processor and offer a new version of webOS, among others features. LG 4K Smart OLED TV also included support for AMD FreeSync, NVIDIA G-SYNC, and HDMI 2.1a.

LG G3 Smart TV 4K OLED

At the heart of the LG G3 Smart TV 4K OLED is the α9 Gen6, a 4K AI processor that is expected to deliver superior picture and sound quality thanks to “deep learning technology”. Supposedly, this should apply to dynamic tone mapping and content upscaling. LG claims the α9 Gen6 creates virtual 9.1.2 surround sound through the trio’s built-in speakers. The G3 can also output to the built-in speakers and compatible soundbars using technology that LG describes as “WOW Orchestra”.

LG Display has confirmed more details about its next-gen OLED panels. Coming soon in the G3 series LG 4K Smart OLED TV models, LG Display’s “OLED Meta” panels are expected to deliver higher brightness than their predecessors, with a peak brightness of up to 2,100 nits. LG Display says its new screens also offer wider viewing angles while consuming less power.

Initially, LG Electronics only revealed that the G3 series LG 4K Smart OLED TV would be over 70% brighter than its predecessors. LG Display has just clarified the peak brightness levels to expect from third-gen panels and how it achieved this improvement.

As the company’s official images show, this new G3 series LG 4K Smart OLED TV will be known as “OLED Meta” or META Technology 1.0. It would appear that the biggest generational change is the microlenses in front of each OLED pixel. LG Display claims that a 77-inch 4K panel contains 5,117 microlenses per pixel or 42.4 billion microlenses across the entire panel. These billions of microlenses direct light toward viewers and reduce glare inside the panel by minimizing light scatter. This change works in conjunction with an algorithm called “Meta Booster” to deliver a maximum brightness of 2,100 nits, compared to 1,300 nits for older LG OLED panels.

LG Display adds that its Micro Lens Array (MLA) technology also reduces power consumption by up to 22% compared to the latest generation OLED panels, with each OLED pixel able to operate at lower brightness while maintaining the same overall brightness of the panel. Third-generation OLED panels are also expected to offer better viewing angles, with a 30-degree improvement from 130 to 160 degrees.

Additionally, webOS received a major update, with a refined user interface and improved home screen, among other changes. LG adds that the G3 will launch with AMD FreeSync, NVIDIA G-SYNC, and HDMI 2.1a, which offers Source-Based Tone Mapping (SBTM) and Quick Media Switching VRR (QMS-VRR) over HDMI 2.1. This latest technology would prevent the G3 from going black when changing frame rates.
