Lenovo ThinkPad T14s Gen 2 remains with 16: 9 display and gets shorter key travel

The Lenovo T14s Gen 1 was one of the best business laptops of 2020. The successor Lenovo ThinkPad T14s Gen 2 brings a new design as well as an AMD Ryzen 5000 and Intel Tiger Lake, but unlike the X series, it remains in the 16: 9 format. In addition, the key travel is reduced.

If you wanted to buy a Lenovo laptop for work in 2020, then the Lenovo T14s Gen 1 was often on the list of possible models (approx. $1000 on Amazon). Unlike the ThinkPad X1 Carbon, the ThinkPad T14s was also available with an AMD Ryzen 4000 and the smaller ThinkPad X13 Gen 1 wasn’t more attractive.

That could change in 2021. The new Lenovo ThinkPad T14s Gen 2 is a redesign compared to the previous year’s model, but there is a decisive difference between the new ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 9 and the ThinkPad X13 Gen 2: The Lenovo T14s Gen 2 laptop remains in the wider 16:9 format.

So Lenovo is not following the trend towards more picture height with 16:10. Instead, the display options are largely the same as in the predecessor. The only difference in the display: the entry panel now shines 300 instead of 250 cd/m².

Although the old-fashioned-looking display frame underneath the monitor is retained, Lenovo has otherwise made all the design changes to the ThinkPad X13 Gen 2 in the T14s Gen 2 as well: Lenovo has moved the speakers to the top, the touchpad is widened, the power button and fingerprint reader are merged. Here, too, there will be a choice between aluminum and magnesium/carbon housing, which corresponds to the choice between black and gray.

As with the ThinkPad X13, the key travel is reduced from 1.8 to 1.5 mm, which means that the T14s Gen 2 corresponds to the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 8 in this respect.

Intel Tiger Lake and AMD Ryzen 5000 take care of the CPU performance. The RAM is still firmly soldered, but at least Lenovo now uses LPDDR4X instead of normal DDR4 memory – this should benefit the GPU performance and energy consumption.

The communication options are also being upgraded: The T14s Gen 2 is the first ThinkPad laptop in the T series with 5G, and Wi-Fi 6E is exclusive to the Intel T14s. The microSD card reader is no longer required, instead, the USB-C ports are upgraded to Thunderbolt 4.

Lenovo ThinkPad T14s Gen 2 price and availability

The ThinkPad T14s Gen 2 with Tiger Lake is now available to buy on the Newegg.com website for $1,847.
