Leica XU Typ 113 Compact Waterproof Camera with 23mm f1.7 Lens Launched

Leica XU Typ 113 is basically a waterproof variant of the Leica X Typ 113 was announced back in 2014. This is a tough, durable, compact camera with a large aperture 23mm f/1.7 ASPH lens. It is light in weight, easy to handle and deliver exceptional picture quality.

The Leica XU Typ 113 is compact in size, lightweight but extremely durable with shockproof and water resistant for use in harsh environments. It is a premium compact camera with 16.2-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor. It has a broad ISO range from 100 to 12500 to suit working in a wide array of lighting conditions, but the highest shutter speed is only 1 / 2000s.

It comes equipped with fixed Summilux 23mm f/1.7 ASPH. Lens flaunts optical design comprised of 10 elements in 8 groups, including 2 aspherical elements. Large f/1.7 aperture also enhanced low-light performance and, when combined with a dedicated manual focus ring, allows for greater control over depth of field when using selective focus techniques.

A 23 mm prime lens on a camera with 1.5X crop factor APS-C sensor gives a field of view equivalent to that of 35mm on a full-frame sensor. The lens comes with a very special UW protective glass coating that can adapts white balance and distortion correction to underwater conditions.

Lens also integrates Flash with maximum range up to 2 meters (effective range 0.98 – 6.56′). There is no optical viewfinder, but in return we have 3.0-inch LCD screen that uses a resolution of 920,000 pixels to see Live View. The company also reinforced this screen with protective cover to prevent the accidental fall. Leica XU records FullHD 1080p video at 30fps.

Originally intended to be a durable camera for extreme situations, Leica XU Typ 113 can operate at a maximum depth of 15 meters for up to 60 minutes, can resist shock when dropped from 1.2m and operate within temperature from 0° to 40° C. The camera covered with Anodized aluminum metal, rubber coated body to increase ruggedness when handling underwater.

Leica XU Typ 113 price is quite high $2,950 USD, which is now available for pre-order at B&Hphotovideo e-commerce online store. Compared with the current price of Leica X Type 113 Camera around $2,019, the calculated difference around $931 is quite reasonable for the water resistance body.
