Venus Optics has unveiled the new Laowa 90mm f2.8 2x Ultra Macro APO for full-frame mirrorless cameras. The ultra macro lens turned out to be compact and at the same time, supports 2: 1 magnification and high-quality optical characteristics.
The new macro lens has a minimum focusing distance of 20.5 cm. That will allow you to take super close-ups of small details. At the same time, since magnification from 0.1x to 2x is available, this will allow you to have quite a lot of flexibility when cropping. The manufacturer reports that the optics can also be used as a portrait lens.
The optical scheme of the lens includes 3 elements with extra-low dispersion (they suppress longitudinal and lateral chromatic aberration in the focus and blur areas). Halos are minimized across the entire aperture range, according to the manufacturer.
The optical formula is designed specifically to work with mirrorless systems. A shorter effective distance not only improves image sharpness but also makes the lens more compact and portable.
The new lens weighs 619 grams at 74 x 120mm and is one of the most compact options on the market when compared to similar lenses. The lens has a 13-blade aperture that produces round bokeh.
The internal focusing design prevents dust from entering the lens optics as well as avoiding accidental collision with the subject when shooting macro. This lens does not have autofocus. Only manual focusing (MF) is available.
Price and availability
The new Laowa 90mm f2.8 2x Ultra Macro APO lens is priced at $499 and is finally available to pre-order on the Adorama.com store.

Recently, Venus Optics has unveiled the Laowa 15mm F4.5R Zero-D Shift lens for Canon EF, Canon RF, Nikon F, Nikon Z, Sony E, Pentax K, Fujifilm G, and L-mount cameras. The new lens features a 14-blade aperture (compared to a 5-blade aperture in the standard version), resulting in a softer bokeh effect, and is priced at $1,199.
