With the Laowa 24mm T14 2X Periprobe macro cine lens, the Venus Optics has launched a new Periprobe designed for cameras with sensors up to 35mm full format and is available with various mounts. (ARRI PL, Canon EF, Canon RF, Nikon F, Nikon Z, Sony E, and L-Mount)

The new Periprobe now comes with two interchangeable tubes for the front part of the lens. In addition to a straight one (like the previous “Macro Probe” model), there is now a kind of periscope attachment that you can use to take pictures and film around the corner in front. It can be very useful, for example, if you want to take pictures from above in a model railway town from the point of view of a miniature pedestrian.

The 24mm T14 2X macro comes as a cine lens and has a maximum aperture of T14 and a minimum aperture of T40, allowing for a workable depth of field in these extreme macro ranges. (As a cine lens, the aperture values are given in transmission or T-values, while with the previous lens the aperture values are given in F-stops or values.)

The new Laowa 24mm T14 2X Periprobe brings new shooting possibilities to the market. Even with the first model, the Macro Probe introduced in 2019, it was possible to take special shots from an insect perspective that would never have been possible with other lenses. The field of application does not necessarily extend to macro shots in the classic sense, because many photographers and filmmakers used the previous lens for shots from unusual perspectives.

The new Laowa 24mm T14 2X Periprobe differs in the two supplied interchangeable front tubes, while the previous “Laowa 24mm F14 2X Macro Probe” has a permanently installed front tube. The new Periprobe is a cine lens and therefore equipped with gear rims, whereas the Macro Probe was equipped with “normal” focus and aperture adjustment rings and only had gear rims as a cine variant. Incidentally, there is also a clear price difference, because the new Periprobe is significantly more expensive, as it costs almost twice as much.

The unusual shape of the housing, and the professional features, such as a waterproof front panel, offer unprecedented creative possibilities for filmmakers and photographers. It can be submerged in water or liquid to a depth of approx. 20 cm without special housing.

The Periprobe is supplied as a set with interchangeable tubes in a robust case. As before, one tube can simply take pictures straight ahead, the other 90 degrees around the corner. With an angle of view of 85° and a very small minimum distance of 2cm, breathtaking perspectives are possible even in the smallest of spaces.

With a focal length of 24mm, it is a wide-angle macro lens for full-frame cameras with a maximum magnification of 2:1. The Periprobe has a wider perspective than other macro telephoto lenses and a larger aperture range from T14 to T40. Therefore, it has a greater depth of field at short distances.

The long and tubular lens barrel, consisting of 28 lens elements in 19 groups, enables many unusual shooting situations. The long construction also guarantees a safe distance from the subject, which is particularly important when photographing animals.

The built-in LED light at the top provides a bright, dimmable light source that can be adjusted to 11 levels. A power bank or a USB power adapter can be used as the power source.
