HP ZBook Firefly G7 Mobile Workstation with Intel Comet Lake-U, Nvidia Quadro: Pre-Order

What distinguishes a mobile workstation laptop? When it comes to HP, it’s all about uncompromising performance, good mobility, and excellent displays. But you should be careful with the latter: HP does offer interesting options, but by default, the company almost uses shockingly bad panels.

HP ZBook Firefly G7

HP ZBook Firefly G7 comes in a 14 and 15.6-inch model. Apart from the display, the equipment is practically identical, but the keyboard of the larger model offers a Numpad in contrast to the smaller version.

The manufacturer promises a powerful performance thanks to the Intel Comet Lake-U processors up to the Core i7-10810U with six cores and clock frequencies up to 4.9 GHz and the Nvidia Quadro P520 with 4GB GDDR5 graphics memory. The graphics chip is roughly comparable to an Nvidia GeForce MX150 so that the new ZBook Firefly should not be suitable for casual gamers or creative professionals with graphics-intensive applications. There is also up to 64GB of DDR4-2666 RAM and a PCIe M.2 SSD with up to 2TB.

You should be a bit careful with the screen because HP offers a 1080p panel in both models, which can only display 45 percent of the NTSC color space and is only 250nits bright – not ideal for a powerful workstation and practically unusable for everyone kind of graphic design. Both portable workstation models can be equipped with an anti-reflective 4K IPS panel, which can display almost the entire sRGB color space and is particularly bright with the 14-inch model with 550nits, whereas the larger model has to be satisfied with a 400nits brightness.

A highlight of the smaller model is the extremely bright display option with 1,000 nits, but you have to be satisfied with a 1080p resolution, the color display is only mediocre with 72 percent of the NTSC color space. Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5 are included as standard, an LTE modem is available for an extra charge.

Mobile Workstation laptop

The HP ZBook Firefly offers two Thunderbolt 3 ports (USB-C), one HDMI 1.4b, two USB-A, and one AUX. HP promises a battery life of 14 hours for both models, whereby the actual runtime will depend heavily on the chosen display.

Pricing and availability

The HP ZBook Firefly G7 can be pre-ordered through the Bhphotovideo.com store and prices starting at $ 1,778.

Last year, Asus has introduced ProArt StudioBook Pro X (W730) – a true high-end mobile workstation laptop that aimed at creative people and image professionals, but capable of offering top performance even in different areas, driven by a very high profile hardware configuration and compliant with all the latest generation standards.
