Since its debut in 2016, HP has always powered the Omen 17 gaming laptop with an Intel processor. That changes with the new HP AI laptop Omen 17 2024, which gets an AMD Ryzen 9 8945HS, but the modernized design leads to performance compromises.
The HP Omen 2024 has a brand new design with strongly rounded corners, a keyboard with a numeric keypad, and numerous ports on the back, which should make it more comfortable to use as a desktop replacement. Surprisingly, the new AI gaming laptop is thicker and heavier than its predecessor, with a height of 2.99 centimeters and a weight of 2.95 kilograms.
Nevertheless, HP makes compromises in terms of performance because, instead of the Intel Core i9-13900HX, the new HP AI laptop is equipped with a maximum of an AMD Ryzen 9 8945HS, which is significantly slower with only eight cores instead of 24 and a TDP of 45 watts. Instead of the GeForce RTX 4090 laptop GPU, the new top model only has an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 laptop GPU with 8 GB GDDR6 graphics memory.
HP emphasizes that the AI gaming laptop offers an impressive price-performance ratio. HP AI laptop features a 17.3-inch IPS display with 2,560 x 1,440 resolution, a 240Hz refresh rate, and 300nits brightness. The 83 Wh battery supports charging at up to 230 watts.
The HP Omen 17 2024 only has one USB-C port, which achieves data rates of up to 10 Gbit/s. Apart from that, the notebook has three USB-A ports, HDMI 2.1, Gigabit Ethernet, and a 3.5 mm headphone jack.
HP AI laptop price and release date
The HP Omen 17 2024 is finally available on Bhphotovideo.com and Amazon.co.uk for a recommended retail price starting at £1,149.99.
The top model includes a 1 TB PCIe 4.0 SSD and 32 GB of DDR5-5600 RAM. It also comes standard with Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, an RGB-lit keyboard, and stereo speakers tuned by HyperX.
HP has also introduced the EliteBook Ultra G1q 2.2K laptop. The Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite X1E-78-100 powers it and the laptop features a 59Wh 3-cell battery. It also features a 14-inch 2.2K IPS display with a brightness of 300 nits.
