Heritage Audio 73JR II: New Microphone Preamplifier for 500 Series

Heritage Audio brings out a successor to the 500 series modules 73 JR. When choosing the name, the manufacturer decided on 73JR II Microphone Preamplifier. The module extends the features of its predecessor in some areas.

Heritage Audio 73JR II Microphone Preamplifier

According to the manufacturer, the Heritage Audio 73JR II is the closest possible replica of a three-stage Class A 73 microphone preamp that fits completely into a single 500 slot. The components are of course at their best: components of Styroflex® u nd T antalum, a JFET circuit from the transmitters of Carnhill. The input and output transformers were manufactured in the Carnhill factory in Oxford, England, exclusively for Heritage Audio Preamplifiers and, according to the manufacturer, make up a lot of the “mojo” of the sound, especially at the entrance. The same transformers are also in the modules of the 80 series.

The discrete Class-A high-pass filter has been updated and can now be continuously adjusted from 20 to 220 Hz. This should help you get a better grip on low frequencies. The line mode enables reamping of already recorded tracks and gives them a little coloring. The DI input automatically switches from mic to DI when a mono jack cable is plugged in.

Thanks to the three gain stages, the preamplifier delivers a total of up to 80 dB of gain with a manageable background noise of -125 dBu EIN (Equivalent Input Noise). The revised internal power supply is intended to keep distortions as low as possible.

If you’re into the 73 Neve sound and are a fan of 500 lunch boxes, you should keep an eye on the 73JR II. Thomann carries some of the manufacturer’s 500 components, maybe the mic preamp will appear there soon.
