Gotham Knights game pre-orders started, but old-gen consoles remain at stake

There is more than one good reason to talk about the Gotham Knights game, the new video game by WB and DC dedicated to lovers of the narrative universe dedicated to the BatMan. To the narrative universe, yes because the protagonist of the title will not be Batman himself (who died together with Commissioner Gordon in the events told in the title) but some Gotham characters that gravitate within it (Nightwing, Batgirl, Robin, and Red Hood).

The good news is that Gotham Knights pre-orders have officially kicked off – and given the delays accumulated by the project it’s a welcome confirmation, plus there are details on the Deluxe and Collector editions and finally, a new Gotham Knights trailer that focuses on gameplay and shows two of the four playable characters, specifically Nightwing and Red Hood. All of the above while perceiving a renewed interest in Batman & Co. after the last, very successful feature film (The Batman) dedicated to him.

But the most surprising aspect of the recent news on the title concerns the decision of the developers not to make it available for the old gen consoles. It is a very courageous choice, given that in the face of a decidedly large fleet of old gen consoles (PS4 and Xbox One X / S), that of the new generation consoles (PS5 and Xbox Series X / S) was penalized by the well-known difficulties in meeting demand – problems persist.

The developers – the title is made by Warner Bros. Games Montréal – have thus decided to give their answer to the question that many video game fans (on consoles) have asked themselves in recent months: when will the next-gen arrive? The limited stocks of the new consoles have prolonged the longevity of the previous ones more than normal, which is good for those who did not intend to make the generation leap, but penalizes the owners of PS5 and Xbox Series X / S who are due in largely content with cross-gen productions unable to take full advantage of the latest hardware.

The gamble is partly justified by the timing of the arrival of Gotham Knights, which will be available starting next October 25th. Until then it is hoped that the availability of the new consoles will further improve. After all, without giving a clean break to the old gen, there are no valid reasons why end-users should be interested in buying the new consoles, availability permitting: if the prospect is to continue playing cross-gen titles then we might save money and stay with the old gen as well.

It hoped that focusing only on the next-gen consoles can lead to a title capable of squeezing their hardware properly and not only translate into cost savings linked to optimization costs for old-gen consoles.
