GoPro Hero 10 Black is here: The best action cam is even better but also costs more

The time has come! After many leaks in advance, the Go Pro HERO 10 is finally ready for action. The best action camera in terms of features with a new GP2 processor, which not only promises higher frame rates and more quality but also a smoother operation. But for this, you have to dig deeper into your pockets in 2021.

Go Pro HERO 10 Black best action camera

Action cams have come a long way. With the GoPro Hero6 Black in 2017 and the change to its first own chipset called GP1, GoPro, in particular, reached a milestone in terms of quality and features, which will now be raised to a new level with the Go Pro 10 Black in 2021. According to GoPro, it was only the GP1 SoC that enabled such innovative features as HyperSmooth stabilization, which, as HyperSmooth 4, is now supposed to make a gimbal superfluous – a claim that was first made years ago, but now for most users is true.

Go Pro Hero 10 Black is compatible with the accessories of its predecessor

Many leaks in the last few days have already revealed the most important specs for the new GoPro10 generation, hardly a question has remained unanswered. In contrast to the previous year, in which the design of the GoPro Hero 9 Black was changed a little, most of the accessories of the predecessor can still be used this year, especially since neither the battery itself nor the size and design of the Actioncam has changed much one of the blue color accents on the logo and “license plate”.

New GP2 chipset for higher frame rates and better operation

The partially doubled frame rates for all operating modes of the GoPro Hero10 Black were discussed a lot in advance. 5.3K video can be recorded at 60 fps, even with activated HyperSmooth 4.0. The latter also applies to 4K / 120 and 2.7K at 240 fps, i.e. 8x slow motion. The significantly increased performance of the GP2 should also ensure the smoother operation of the touchscreen, something that has been criticized quite often in the past. Let’s see if GoPro has got the crashes mentioned by testers under control. The new GP2 processor will now also be used for 3D noise suppression and local tone mapping, which, for example, should lead to better contrast, more realistic textures, and more details in low light, promises GoPro.

Better image quality thanks to a hydrophobic coating on the lens cover

It was also announced in advance that the interchangeable cover of the lens has now been provided with a water-repellent and anti-reflective coating, which should also help avoid lens flares and other artifacts. GoPro should not have changed anything in terms of optics, however, the photo resolution of the sensor itself has been increased from 20 megapixels to 23 megapixels, but GoPro has not yet commented on the size, so we assume that it has not been increased substantially. The ability to extract 19.6 MP photos from 5.3K 4: 3 videos sounds quite practical too.

TimeWarp 3.0 and many other power tools

In the meantime, the GoPro Hero 10 Black sports camera is far from being just a pure action cam for athletes and adrenaline junkies. From the webcam mode for office workers to an HDR-capable photo camera to the integrated vlogging solution with the corresponding mods, pretty much anything is possible with the action cam, and GoPro is also refining the feature set of its action cam with improved live streaming features. The front display installed for the first time in the predecessor has also been optimized for better control when streaming.

Go Pro HERO 10 price and availability

As usual, the Go Pro HERO 10 Black comes in a package with a bag, 1,720 mAh battery, a basic mount set, and a USB cable. Without additional housing, it is waterproof up to 10 meters and should also be able to cope with a little rough handling. At the moment the best action camera is available to buy via Bhphotovideo.com, Adorama.com, and Amazon.com at $499.99.
