The Garmin inReach Messenger Plus promises a first-class connection, even without a mobile network. This compact, waterproof SOS communicator not only sends text messages but also transmits photos, videos, and GPS coordinates via a satellite network.
Around two years after launching the inReach Messenger (approx. $249 / £209 on Amazon), Garmin presents the inReach Messenger Plus. This new model can send large amounts of data via a satellite communication network. While the inReach Messenger mainly sends and receives text messages, the Plus model also lets you send photos and voice messages up to 30 seconds long.
As with the cheaper SOS communicator, the inReach Messenger Plus must be connected to the Garmin Messenger app on a smartphone to send and receive messages. The inReach Messenger Plus can also download weather forecasts and send the current GPS coordinates to friends so that they can follow the user’s tour. A dedicated emergency call button on the side of the case makes it possible to call for help without having access to the smartphone.
The Garmin Response Team coordinates emergency calls. The SOS function enables two-way communication with the emergency call center. It also sends the GPS coordinates from the inReach Messenger Plus. You can mark waypoints using the Garmin Explore app. This lets the small display on the Messenger Plus show the distance to the next waypoint.
