Garmin now offers a broad portfolio of watches with smart functions. The manufacturer uses a comparatively similar hardware base and its own operating system and also serves niches such as golf.

With the Garmin MK2s, the manufacturer is releasing a new smartwatch that is heavily based on the Garmin Fenix 6. The Descent MK2s can be used above the water like the Fenix 6, for example, to record multisport training sessions. There is not only a heart rate monitor with the oxygen saturation measurement known from the Fenix 6 available but also a GPS module, which can also precisely record the distance covered, for example during running units.

The GPS module can be used during dives to record the start and endpoint of the dive – for example, it is possible to navigate back to the entry point and thus to the equipment left behind on the shore. During the time underwater, divers should benefit from the only additional sensor: The pressure sensor should measure the diving depth and use the values it collects to plan a decompression stop, for example. As with its predecessors, the MK2s should also be able to display the remaining dive time in combination with the Descent T1 tank pod.

Price and availability

The Garmin MK2s watch-style dive computer smartwatch is significantly more compact than the previous Garmin Descent Mk2 and Descent Mk2i diving watches and should only measure 42 millimeters – with a 1.2-inch display. The 45 grams heavy and up to 10 ATM waterproof watch has now listed on Amazon.com at a price of $999.99. The larger Garmin Descent MK2 is still available for around 1,289 from Amazon.

Recently, Garmin has introduced Venu 2 and Venu 2s two new GPS Smartwatch models in two sizes, with new features and twice the battery life, and priced under $400.
