The Garmin Descent G1 Solar is a smartwatch with an integrated dive computer – or vice versa. Garmin wants to combine the best of both worlds with the device and offers GPS, solar, and heart rate measurement.
After the launch of the Garmin Fenix 7 Series (REVIEW) Garmin is now offering a new Descent G1 Solar smartwatch or a new dive computer. The model also offers the usual features of Garmin multisport watches, but can also be used for diving. The Garmin Solar watch offers a two-part display, the resolution is given as 176 x 176 pixels. It has a monochrome colorless MIP display which should be easy to read even in direct sunlight.
A solar cell is installed, which should increase the battery life in smartwatch mode to up to four months. In GPS mode, the runtime is up to 39 hours, in diving mode, the watch should last up to 25 hours – in some usage modes the watch should – provided there is sufficient sunlight – even be able to be operated endlessly without an external power supply.
Divers can use the watch, which is water-resistant up to a water pressure of 10 ATM, to record dives, with various dive modes being available. The entry point can be precisely recorded via GPS, Glonass, and Galileo. The Garmin Solar watch is compatible with inReach satellite communicators and offers tidal data in addition to a diver’s compass. Surfers, for example, can also find out about the wave height.
On land, thanks to the heart rate module, the watch can be used to record various sporting activities, with recommendations for both correct recovery and correct training being given if desired. In addition, there is the analysis of sleep. Daily activity can also be recorded. In everyday life, notifications from a paired smartwatch can also be displayed.
