With the Edge Explore 2, Garmin is now offering a new navigation system for cyclists. The Garmin bike computers system has a three-inch screen with a 240 x 400 pixels resolution and weighs 104 grams. According to the manufacturer, the Garmin cycling computer device is protected against dust and, in particular, water via IPX7. The GNSS module supports GPS, Glonass, and Galileo. A barometric altitude sensor and an accelerometer are installed.

A basic map is installed in the 16 GB RAM, and further maps can be added. Waypoints and routes can be saved. According to Garmin information, the Edge Explore 2 can prefer low-traffic roads for a relaxed bike tour when routing. Individually adaptable activity profiles should also ensure the right surface – so that MTB riders, for example, also get their money’s worth.

The GPS navigator system should be able to work particularly well with e-bikes. Specifically, when choosing the route, the charge level, the selected support, and the range of the e-bike are taken into account if desired, and the battery level should also be checked throughout the tour. Since the device can at least estimate the remaining battery charge based on the selected route, the Edge Explore 2 should warn accordingly if the charge level is too low. The ANT+LEV support of the e-bike is important for communication and control.

The built-in battery should last up to 16 hours. The power version of the device is equipped with a holder and charging contacts, which means that the navigation system can be connected directly to compatible e-bikes with Shimano or Bosch motors. There is also a version with the universal USB type A connection. Communication with a smartphone and the display of corresponding notifications is possible via Bluetooth.

Garmin Edge Explore 2 price and availability

The Edge Explore 2 Garmin cycling computer is now available on Amazon.com at $299.99, and the power bundle costs $399.99. The standard version should be ready for dispatch in a few days, while the power bundle will take five to eight weeks.

Recently, Garmin introduced the Edge 1040 Solar bike computer whose runtime can be significantly extended using solar energy. It uses a 3.5-inch touchscreen, a GPS module, and some sensors to implement a variety of practical features and is priced at $749.99.
