With the CineBeam PU700R, LG introduced the new DLP 4K Ultra HD projector as an alternative to Samsung’s The Freestyle (Hands-on), which not only has a higher resolution but also delivers a significantly brighter picture.
LG challenges Samsung’s The Freestyle (approx. $598 / £500 on Amazon). The manufacturer has officially presented its new LG CineBeam PU700R projector in South Korea. In the USA, the B&H photo store is already offering the new LG 4K smart home theater cinebeam device. However, LG’s alternative to The Freestyle is significantly less expensive.
While Samsung’s alternative has a Full HD resolution, the LG PU700R has a 4K resolution. However, this is not native but is achieved by upscaling. The LG cine beam projector is just as versatile and particularly suitable for mobile and spontaneous use. It can be flexibly rotated on its base, and the angle adjusted to project onto the wall or screen in a wide variety of positions. The projector can even project its image onto the ceiling. A 4-, 9- and 15-point image correction, keystone correction, and autofocus help with the alignment.
LG does not have an integrated battery, which many other compact projectors have integrated. So there must always be a socket or a power station nearby. The manufacturer specifies the maximum image size as 120 inches, the brightness thanks to triple LED technology with 1,000 ANSI lumens. Both are more than Samsung’s The Freestyle. There is also HDR playback, a contrast ratio of 150,000:1, and an input lag of a good 38 ms in gaming mode.
As with its smart TVs, LG uses WebOS 22 as the operating system. This enables the installation of numerous apps for streaming and co. External players include HDMI 2.1, USB-A, and USB-C as well as Wi-Fi, dual -Bluetooth, MiraCast, and AirPlay 2 available. LG also installs a 5-watt speaker in the CineBeam PU700R, which weighs 3 kg.
