DJI Ronin 4D 8K Cinematic Camera Introduced

The DJI has announced a 4-axis cinema camera – Ronin 4D. The camcorder is available in two versions: with 6K and 8K video recording. The design of the new 6K/8K camera includes two versions with Zenmuse X9 cameras and is the first 4-axis gimbal to compensate for operator movement when walking, running, or shooting passages, thus replacing the camera trolley.

The DJI Ronin 4D features a full-frame DJI Zenmuse X9 camera with support for 8K 75fps, 6K 60fps, and 4K 120fps. The full 8K image resolution is equal to 8192 × 4320 pixels, which ensures that all the smallest details of the shooting are preserved in perfect quality, according to the manufacturer, and also allows for more flexible framing, video stabilization, and modification, and during subsequent processing and compression, for example, up to 4K without loss of quality.

According to the manufacturer, the main idea of the DJI Ronin 4D is to make the full power of modern cinema technology more accessible. The most important feature of the Ronin 4D cinema camera is the use of a combination of downward-facing ToF sensors and IMU barometers, which monitor the distance to the ground, thereby stabilizing the image in flight.

The entire system is powered by a TB50 battery, just like the new DJI drones. These batteries provide up to 2.5 hours of shooting and a charge time of 1.5 hours.

In addition, it is reported that there is also support for video transmission and remote control of the entire system, and objects can be tracked using ActiveTrack Pro, which is also borrowed from the Phantom 4.

What is important, the movie camera has, among other things, automatic focusing. The operator is offered three focus modes – manual, automatic, and hybrid, which can maintain focus on the subject, allowing the operator to intervene in the further process if the operator decides to use the new LiDAR rangefinder. Its operating range is up to 10 m – here autofocus does not depend on light and contrast thanks to a sensor with 43,200 points.

As mentioned above, the manufacturer offers several options for the Ronin 4D with any of the Zenmuse X9 cameras capable of shooting in Apple ProRes, ProRes RAW, H.264. The Zenmuse X9 camera itself is equipped with a full-frame 36 × 24 mm CMOS sensor with ISO sensitivity from 200-12800 and dual native ISO.

The dynamic range is claimed to be 14 stops, and there is also support for DJI’s color system and built-in ND physical filters with a density of nine stops.

The Zenmuse X9 can mount a variety of lenses, including third-party lenses, DJI proprietary lenses thanks to the DL mount, or Leica M and Sony E-mount lenses.

DJI Ronin 4D 8K Camera

As stated earlier, the new DJI Ronin 4D Cinema Camera features the latest O3 Pro transmission technology, capable of streaming FHD 1080p video at 60fps from a remote operator up to 6 km away. This technology was previously called OcuSync 3 and was used in drones from DJI itself.

A new feature in DJI Ronin 4D: Mirror Control Mode. This feature works through a high-brightness monitor with the same interface as the main 7-inch touchscreen monitor, allowing remote setup when connecting the gimbal to various platforms such as crane, cable, or when mounted on a car mount.

With the help of the monitor, you can precisely control the focus and movements of the stabilizer, start and stop recording, as well as change the preset camera parameters, focusing on the current type of shooting.

In terms of audio, the Ronin 4D’s built-in microphones support dual-channel audio recording. There are also 3.5mm jacks and an XLR microphone port.
