Canon EOS R Full-frame Mirrorless, RF Mounts and Adapters Launched: Prices and Availability

Canon has introduced EOS R and the new RF Mount system. The Japanese company closely follows the competitor Nikon and debuts in the full-frame mirrorless market with a product designed to be the first in a long series. It starts with the completely redesigned body, then moving to an autofocus system that is defined as the fastest in the world. The goal is very clear: fill the delay accumulated compared to other brands (especially Sony) and conquer this growing segment.

The body of the Canon EOS R is made of magnesium alloy with some parts in polycarbonate and glass fiber. The measurements are 135.8 x 98.3 x 84.4 mm with a weight of 580 grams (660 with memory card and battery). The sensor mounted on the EOS R is a 36 x 24 mm CMOS with a resolution of 30.3 megapixels. The image processing is entrusted to the DIGIC 8 processor. The sensitivity ranges between ISO 100 and ISO 40,000, expandable to ISO 50 and ISO 102.400.

The autofocus is the fastest in the world according to Canon. In continuous fire mode, only 0.05 seconds are needed to attach a subject. The Canon EOS R uses the Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology with 5,655 manually selectable AF points, supporting AF at up to f/11 with a 384 zone (24×16) real-time metering system. Focus points cover 88% of the surface horizontally and 100% vertically. Continuous shots reach a speed of 8 frames per second with fixed AF and 5fps with tracking AF.

The 0.5″ OLED electronic viewfinder with a 3.69 million dots (1280 x 960 pixels) resolution. The coverage is 100% of the field with 0.76x magnification. On the back, there is a fully articulated LCD display with a diagonal of 3.15″ and 2.1 million points resolution. The touchscreen is also present.

The highest resolution supported when shooting video is Ultra HD at 24, 25 or 30 frames per second. The user can also enable ALL-I compression and bring the bitrate from 120Mbps to 480Mbps. In Full HD it goes up to 60fps. For high-speed video, you need to set the 720p (1280 x 720 pixels) resolution.

The connectivity includes a USB 3.1 port (can also be used for charging), a mini HDMI output, a microphone input, a headphone output, 802.11n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.1. Obviously, there is the possibility to manage the functions through an application for iOS and Android. The juice is provided by an LP-E6N battery, credited with a range of about 370 shots. Photos and videos are stored on the SD slot compatible with UHS-II cards.

Canon RF Mount and Adapter

The Canon RF Mount system is debuted on EOS R, equipped with a 20mm flange distance and 54mm inner diameter. Canon has also redesigned the bus that connects the optics with the camera. The 12-pin connection now allows the 40 times transmission data. It will also allow us to use the Dual Sensing IS, a function that exploits the stabilization of the lenses in synergy with the gyroscope integrated into the camera body.
