Boss Katana-110 Bass and Katana-210 Bass with Class-AB Amp

The two new bass Boss amps, the Boss Katana-110 Bass and Katana-210 Bass use the same design philosophy as the in-house guitar amplifiers, which are absolute bestsellers and top our top lists of the most successful amps every year.

So the manufacturer offers us two new combos Bass Amp models, a smaller 1×10 with 60 watts (16.8 kg) and a larger 2×10 with 160 watts (21.8 kg). The Boss Katana Bass Amp series aims to offer a high-quality sound and modern functions that are tailored to the needs of bassists.

The combination of three amplifier types and integrated BOSS effects offers a wide variety of sounds based on 60 or 160 watts of class AB power amp output. We find it very interesting that in times of Class-D dominance, BOSS relies on Class-AB.

What we like about the KATANA series is the selection reduced to the essentials. This is especially useful for beginners! The two Boss Amps offer three preamp types – each with a three-position shape switch for fine-tuning the sound:

  • Vintage: a classic tube sound with an organic tone and natural drive.
  • Flat: a smooth, clear, and dynamic sound with a full spectrum of overtones.
  • Modern: Fast and dynamic response with an extended bass frequency response.

While the independent compressor/limiter and drive sections shape the basic sound, FX1 and FX2 offer a variety of options from the Boss Bass effects library – from standards like chorus and flanger to octave, bass synth, and more. The FX2 section also offers a delay and reverb effect. There are also more than 60 effect types available via the Boss Tone Studio Editor (iOS and Android devices).

The blend section allows the mixing of effect and dry signals. A comprehensive 4-band EQ is also available, including three selectable cut-off frequencies in the low and high-mid bands.

The six Tone Setting memories allow you to save and recall your sounds, including preamp type, EQ, blend, and effects settings. The memory locations can be changed either on the amplifier or via an optional footswitch, an expression pedal, and the GA-FC foot controller. Unfortunately, it costs extra.

There is also an XLR output for connecting to a PA. The signal tap can be switched between direct, pre, and post via a switch. The headphone/recording direct out provides a signal with effects, miked speaker emulation, and three Air Feel settings. You can also record directly into a DAW via the USB port. They thought of everything here, very good!
