Blackmagic Design Pyxis Monitor Up for Pre-Order: On-Camera Display Redefined

Blackmagic Design has released an advanced 5-inch HDR touchscreen display that connects to the Blackmagic Pyxis 6K cinema camera via a USB-C port. The Blackmagic Pyxis monitor is powered via the same cable as the image, meaning no additional batteries are required. It also provides full access to the camera’s settings and menus and looks like it comes with the camera. However, this is not the case: depending on the configuration, its cost ranges from $295 to $645.

It has a side display, which is practically useless for the operator in several standard shooting scenarios. At the time of the announcement of the Blackmagic Pyxis 6K, this moment raised some questions because the only other way to view the image and frame was to connect the viewfinder.

In response, the company released a specialized monitor that provides full control over camera settings and can be conveniently positioned anywhere.

The new Blackmagic Pyxis monitor displays HDR in 1080p resolution with a maximum brightness of 1500 nits and has a diagonal size of 5 inches.

To connect the monitor to the movie camera, you will need one USB-C cable, which is used both to power the device and to transfer data. It is very convenient and does not require the installation of additional batteries and batteries.

Additionally, the touchscreen display offers users the same Blackmagic camera settings as the side monitor, including all overlays, settings, and menu functions. In other words, you have full control of the camera through the same USB-C connection.

The monitor control functionality is only available with the Blackmagic Pyxis 6K cinema camera and the Blackmagic Ursa Cine series. You can use the monitor with other manufacturers’ cameras that output via USB-C. However, it will only function as a preview monitor without interactive control. However, Blackmagic has not yet published any results from this use case.

The Pyxis mount monitor costs $445. The full kit, which includes specialized equipment for installing the URSA Cine EVF electronic viewfinder, along with a rotating mount and carbon rods, costs $645.

The Pyxis monitor, similar to the camera, features three customizable function buttons on the back.

For instance, you can assign functions like FalseColor or high frame rate recording to the monitor buttons, allowing you to activate these settings without touching the camera.

Every Blackmagic Pyxis Monitor comes with a clip-on sunshade for better visibility in bright conditions, and there are three different mounting kits to choose from.

Blackmagic Pyxis 6K features a full-frame sensor with a native resolution of 6048×4032. It allows the use of anamorphic lenses without additional cropping. The declared dynamic range is 13 stops.

There is also a dual base ISO (400 and 3200), which will provide better quality shooting in low-light conditions.

The new compact Blackmagic Pyxis 6K film camera is available in three mounting options: L-Mount, PL, or Locking EF. The L-mount is the most optimal, allowing for PL and EF adapters when needed. But the opposite is not possible. Also rare are adapters for PL optics to the EF bayonet. It has two CFexpress card slots and a USB-C port for direct recording to external drives.
