Black Myth Wukong is a highly anticipated game that has just been released and has received a tremendous response worldwide. The ROG Ally X is a solid choice for enjoying adventures with the Monkey King’s junior on the go. However, the streaming handheld will require configuration adjustments.
Black Myth Wukong is causing a stir because of its engaging storyline and impressive graphics. Every detail, from the water surface to the images of the big bosses, is carefully crafted. The chapters are elaborately designed with distinct colors, creating a great experience, especially the epic confrontation between Sun Wukong and Yang Jian.
Running games smoothly on a handheld console like the ROG Ally X can be challenging. With the proper adjustments, you can still have an enjoyable gaming experience. A comprehensive review of Black Myth Wukong on the ROG Ally X is available in the article below.
Black Myth Wukong on ROG Ally X
Asus ROG Ally X: Compact Size, Powerful Performance!
ROG Ally X is a gaming handheld console with one of the highest configurations today, equipped with an AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme chip with 8 cores and 16 processing threads, including up to 12 GPU cores for game processing, along with an additional 8GB of VRAM to continuously “buff” the power of this model.
Moreover, with a design similar to a mobile console with ABXY keys, Analog sticks, bumpers,… also promises to help the experience of destroying demons, regaining the Six Roots of the Great Sage Equaling Heaven will be a bit different if you are used to playing games with a keyboard on PC. I haven’t used many controller models, so the operation of this one feels a bit unusual. However, it’s still quite enjoyable and enhances the overall gaming experience.
The biggest advantage of the ROG Ally X is its portability. You can take it to a coffee shop, the office, or anywhere else and play Black Myth: Wukong whenever you like.
How to Customize Graphics for Smooth Performance on the ROG Ally X
To provide a comprehensive review, I will test four graphics settings: Low, Medium, High, and Custom. I will also test two scenarios for playing Black Myth Wukong: one with the system plugged in and one using the battery. Additionally, I’ll evaluate two performance modes: Turbo (TDP 35W) and Performance (TDP 17W). In both modes, I will disable the FPS limit to ensure the device can perform at its full potential.
As for adjusting the RAM for the GPU, thanks to the advantage of having an additional 8GB of VRAM that the device owns, I recommend that you naturally adjust it straight to 8GB, which will definitely help your game run optimally according to the device’s capacity.
In the GPU adjustment section, I recommend turning off all settings below to achieve the smoothest gaming experience. Below are the image options that I recommend you leave on ROG Ally X, no matter what graphics Preset you have, this is still a pretty optimal customization section.
- Display Mode: Borderless
- Display Resolution: 1280×720 (HD 720p)
- Framerate Cap: Off
- VSync: Off
- Motion Blur: Off
And without keeping you waiting any longer, here are the configuration options I tested for Black Myth Wukong on ROG Ally X.
Preset Low, Turbo mode 30W
- Super Resolution: 65
- Super Resolution Sampling: FSR
- Frame Generation: On
- Full Ray Tracing: Off
- View Distance Quality: Low
- Anti-Aliasing Quality: Low
- Post-Effects Quality: Low
- Shadow Quality: Low
- Texture Quality: Low
- Visual Effect Quality: Low
- Hair Quality: Low
- Vegetation Quality: Low
- Global Illumination Quality: Low
- Reflection Quality: Low
With this customization, the new Wukong game naturally has the smoothest performance for you to experience, with an average FPS of about 71 FPS that I measured while fighting the boss, although I have not overcome the final boss in chapter 1, the smoothness of this customization is undeniable. Whether you’re farming monsters, sightseeing, or completing normal tasks, the machine can consistently achieve up to 100 FPS, which is excellent performance.
To achieve the optimal customization level for FPS, you may need to sacrifice some graphical quality, which is a key highlight of the game. As a result, the game’s visuals during levels may not be as impressive, and characters may appear with noticeable imperfections and jagged edges. If you’re focused on FPS, it’s best to keep this preset level. However, if you want a more visually impressive experience, increase the character’s vision to 100 in the Super Resolution section. This adjustment will enhance the scene’s overall quality.
Preset Medium, Turbo mode 30W
- Super Resolution: 100
- Super Resolution Sampling: FSR
- Frame Generation: On
- Full Ray Tracing: Off
- View Distance Quality: Medium
- Anti-Aliasing Quality: Medium
- Post-Effects Quality: Medium
- Shadow Quality: Medium
- Texture Quality: Medium
- Visual Effect Quality: Medium
- Hair Quality: Medium
- Vegetation Quality: Medium
- Global Illumination Quality: Medium
- Reflection Quality: Medium
At this configuration level, you can still experience Black Myth Wukong on ROG Ally X at a smooth enough level with an average FPS ranging from 51 – 54 FPS. When I experienced it, this was also a fairly stable configuration level. Although it certainly cannot be as smooth as the Preset low setting, I can still fight monsters normally. It’s just that when I met the Black Bear Boss, I had a bit of difficulty dodging the attacks. However, this setting also allows for more beautiful character animations and scenery.
Preset High, Turbo mode 30W
- Super Resolution: 66
- Super Resolution Sampling: FSR
- Frame Generation: On
- Full Ray Tracing: Off
- View Distance Quality: High
- Anti-Aliasing Quality: High
- Post-Effects Quality: High
- Shadow Quality: High
- Texture Quality: High
- Visual Effect Quality: High
- Hair Quality: High
- Vegetation Quality: High
- Global Illumination Quality: High
- Reflection Quality: High
Even with the highest graphics settings, it’s surprising that the game’s FPS remains stable and comparable to the Medium settings, averaging around 55 FPS. Playing Wukong is still highly feasible and smooth, even during casual play. The beautifully recreated scenery enhances the experience, allowing you to comfortably complete missions and side quests before tackling major battles.
Preset Custom, Turbo 30W mode – Smoothest customization
- Super Resolution: 60
- Super Resolution Sampling: FSR
- Frame Generation: On
- Full Ray Tracing: Off
- View Distance Quality: High
- Anti-Aliasing Quality: High
- Post-Effects Quality: Low
- Shadow Quality: Low
- Texture Quality: High
- Visual Effect Quality: Low
- Hair Quality: Low
- Vegetation Quality: Medium
- Global Illumination Quality: Medium
- Reflection Quality: Low
Based on my experience, these customizations help Wukong strike smoothly and optimally while preserving the mythical beauty that Game Science has infused throughout Wukong’s journey.
With an average frame rate of around 74 FPS during boss fights, the ROG Ally X system provides optimized performance for smooth gameplay. You can execute light and heavy attacks as well as cast magic spells effortlessly. Additionally, customizing the View Distance Quality, Anti-Aliasing Quality, Texture Quality, and Vegetation Quality to medium and high levels enhances both character and scene depth and sharpness.
Custom Preset: Performance Mode 17W – Enjoy 3 Hours of Continuous Gameplay on the Ally X Battery
Many of you are likely wondering about the performance of Wukong when playing on the go without needing to plug in the charger. What can you expect? With the 17W Performance mode, I firmly affirm that ROG Ally X will not disappoint you in both performance and battery life. You can customize the settings as follows:
- Super Resolution: 60
- Super Resolution Sampling: FSR
- Frame Generation: On
- Full Ray Tracing: Off
- View Distance Quality: High
- Anti-Aliasing Quality: High
- Post-Effects Quality: Low
- Shadow Quality: Low
- Texture Quality: High
- Visual Effect Quality: Low
- Hair Quality: Low
- Vegetation Quality: Medium
- Global Illumination Quality: Medium
- Reflection Quality: Low
In general, with the Custom graphics settings that I recommend you leave, the device can still achieve a fairly stable FPS level, hovering around 88 FPS when walking around sightseeing and 62 FPS when engaging in intense combat with bosses. You don’t need to worry about the handheld overheating. During intense combat, I measured the CPU temperature at a maximum of 75 degrees Celsius. Additionally, the heat sink design prevents direct contact with your hands, so you won’t experience heat or discomfort while playing.
The ROG Ally X features an impressive 80WHr battery capacity, providing exceptionally long usage times. This makes it one of the longest-lasting handheld gaming PCs available today. You can play Black Myth: Wukong for up to 3 hours. This duration allows you to comfortably explore, farm monsters for experience, and tackle major bosses. It’s a well-rounded playtime.
