Best WiFi Repeater 2019: Best to Buy

Although we had already written similar guides, it was inevitable to write a guide to explain what a WiFi repeater is and which ones are the best to buy. Being a technology that becomes increasingly standardized, it is good to know what its potential is. And in this constantly updated Best WiFi Repeater 2019 guide will find all the answers!

The wireless repeater is a device now very well known and used mostly in our homes, at those points where the WiFi signal of the router fails to arrive with sufficient power. Furthermore, a WiFi repeater setup is very simple.

Best WiFi Repeater 2019: how does it work?

You certainly already heard of the Access Point or PowerLine, but we don’t want to complicate your life. As the name already says, a WiFi repeater is a device that can “repeat” the WiFi signal coming from your home modem/router. This signal can be repeated in many different ways, but for simplicity in this guide, we will show you the best dual-band WiFi repeaters/extenders, cheap and simple to use!

A dual-band WiFi repeater is a device that can “capture” the WiFi signal coming from the home modem and “repeat” it. For this reason, it needs a double band (dual-band precisely). In fact, the WiFi repeater will create a new WiFi network (to which you could also give another name) that will, however, share the same Internet network as the modem.

For example, in my home, the WiFi signal strength of the modem is very poor, and often the WiFi signal is disconnected. So I installed a WiFi repeater. Now the power of the WiFi network in my home is greater (in fact maximum) than that coming from the home router. If I had to disconnect from that, I would always have my WiFi repeater ready to reconnect! But what changes with a 5 GHz WiFi repeater?

5GHz WiFi repeater: what’s changing?

We want to make it short and explain it to you in the simplest way. The home router emits a WiFi signal, and is a signal, it is issued at a certain frequency. The frequency indicates how many times per second that signal is issued by the router! All basic routers transmit a 2.4 GHz WiFi signal. This means that the signal repeats about 2.4 billion times in a second.

By making quick accounts we can find that the distance from one peak to another of the signal (which you have to imagine with a wave) is about 12.5 centimeters. This means that any obstacle more than 13 cm thick in your home will block the WiFi signal. And this explains why the certain parts of your home the WiFi signal fails to arrive. Obviously, there are many other factors to play.

Why did we do all these accounts? Often the 2.4GHz signal is full of interference and, even if it does not appear, it does not allow the transmission of very large amounts of data. For example, if you have a very fast Internet (fiber for example), a 2.4GHz signal could (with certain exceptions) make you go slower!

In fact, for some years now, the 5GHz signal on our devices (PC, smartphone, router, and 5GHz WiFi repeaters) has become increasingly common. This signal allows to transmit more than twice the information of the traditional 2.4 GHz and is less subject to interference.

On the other hand, the wavelength is halved (just 6 centimeters), and all thicker objects will block this signal. So a 5GHz Wi Fi repeater is much more powerful but we recommend using it to repeat the WiFi signal in a specific room that you need because outside of it the signal will fade very quickly.

Our selection

Below we have collected best WiFi Repeater 2019 – constantly updating the guide – to buy for the features offered and value for money. For each of them, we have shown you the main features and strengths!

TP-Link AC750 / AC1200

[amazon box=”B00NR2VMNC” /] [amazon box=”B01N8ROH7G” /]

Among the cheapest 5GHz WiFi extenders we recommend without a doubt TP-Link, a brand with a lot of experience in the field and with so much choice. In particular, these two models you see above are the best at the lowest price and are currently the best sellers in their category.

The first, or rather the TP-Link AC750 is very simple and suitable for a very quiet “domestic” use, or in a situation in which there are not many devices to connect and you don’t want to necessarily get performance.

Its band combining 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks reaches 750 Mbps and we, therefore, recommend it for those who normally surf the Internet without too many pretensions.

For a few bucks more though, the TP-Link AC1200 could definitely make the difference! Also equipped with a double band (2.4 + 5 GHz) it would allow you to have almost double the previous band (1200 Gbps) allowing connected devices to do more expensive operations like watching videos or playing online games.

In any case, in this price range, the AC1200 is the 5GHz WiFi repeater that we advise you the most, as in addition to the excellent quality and price ratio, it is also very simple to configure (via an app on your smartphone and without the need for a PC).

Netgear EX6120

[amazon box=”B014YN7LVE” /]

However, among the best brands in the industry, they could not fail to mention Netgear. In the list of best WiFi extenders boosters, the Netgear EX6120 is the best model for value for money, able to combine 2.4 and 5 GHz networks to reach a bandwidth of 1200 Mbps (300 Mbps in 2.4 GHz and 900 in 5 GHz) transmitted through the two lateral antennas.

The WiFi repeater setup is very easy because all you have to do is let this WiFi booster communicate with your modem by pressing a button (the WPS button). Added to this is a Fast Ethernet port to connect devices that need an even more stable connection.

TP-Link RE360

[amazon box=”B0743ZC3YQ” /]

The Wi Fi booster after the TP-Link AC1200 that we saw earlier with model number RE305, although it is not very different in performance. Particularity, it has an integrated power outlet. Obviously, every WiFi repeater needs to be powered by an electrical outlet and often if there are two nearby there is the danger that one of them will be blocked. Here is the solution!

For the rest as mentioned, nothing changes compared to the model RE305 except for the design, here much nicer, which among other things integrates the antenna into a plastic housing is very pretty. So even here we have a dual-band of 1200 Gbps with an integrated Ethernet and the WPS button for fast configuration.

Netgear AC1200

[amazon box=”B00R92CLCW” /]

The evolution of the AC1200 wireless repeater model seen a little while ago is called EX6150 and we recommend it purely for those who must make intense use of the network (perhaps with many connected devices) and above all with the need for greater coverage. According to Netgear, this WiFi range extender promises coverage of as many as 3 rooms.

As for the technical data sheet, we are very close to the previous model. So let’s talk about a 1200 Gbps dual-band (300 Mbps in 2.4 GHz and 900 in 5 GHz) but with the integration of a Gigabit Ethernet port designed specifically for streaming and gaming!

AVM FRITZ! 1750E

[amazon box=”B00N80IK88″ /]

Now it’s time to talk about more professional solutions, so it’s time to talk about one of the many AVM FRITZ products! which is undoubtedly one of the best brands in the sector for quality, safety, and performance! In particular, the 5 GHz WiFi repeater that we want to recommend is the 1750E model.

This model is designed to work in dual-band transmitting up to 450 Mbps in 2.4 GHz and a good 1300 Mbps in 5 GHz for a combined total of 1750 Mbps! In short, a lot of bandwidth is available and a lot of it focuses on the 5 GHz frequency, making it perfect for commercial or domestic solutions with FTTC or FTTH fiber.
