Audient EVO 16 USB audio interface wants to make recording easy

Audient EVO 16 is a new audio interface – that relies on eight EVO mic preamps including two JFET inputs plus additional digital ins/outs. In addition, there is the automatically regulating Smartgain feature and the so-called EVO Motion UI control system. The USB interface brings many functions to the table or rack – the price also encourages purchase.

Overall, Audient speaks of 24 inputs and outputs – let’s see how they are divided. First of all, there are eight EVO mic preamps on the analog side, and the two XLR/jack combination sockets on the front are also suitable for JFET instrument inputs. There are also two headphone connections (also on the front) and eight line outputs (jack). The manufacturer supplements this digitally with two optical inputs and outputs.

The EVO 16 is connected via USB 2.0, and as a bonus, there is also a word clock connection. Of course, 48 V phantom power is also available and will be activated with a button. Incidentally, the preamps deliver up to 58 dB of gain, and the converters, which work with a resolution of 24 bits and up to 96 kHz, also promise a dynamic range of 121 dB. Multi-channel smart gain is a function that automatically regulates the gain settings on all eight analog inputs at the same time.

A high-resolution color display (LCD) is part of the device that Audient calls Motion UI. The manufacturer understands this to mean that you can read all the important information on the display, including the status of the individual channels or the levels. The primary operation is via a centrally positioned controller, but there is also a freely assignable function button.

Compatible with macOS and Windows, the EVO Mixer software has various options for assigning inputs and outputs and offers low-latency monitoring. Loopback eliminates feedback when embedding calls or gaming audio, making life easier for streamers and podcasters.

The elegant-looking steel housing is equipped with rubber feet on the underside and thus ensures a non-slip and scratch-resistant firm hold on surfaces – alternatively, installation in the 19-inch rack is possible, but this requires optional rack ears.

Audient EVO 16 price and availability

Audient EVO 16 USB interface is already available to pre-order on the Bhphotovideo.com at $499, and shipping starts in the second quarter (i.e. from June 2022). That sounds very attractive.

Recently, Antelope Audio introduced a new audio interface. Discrete 4 Pro Synergy Core relies on connections with Thunderbolt 3 and USB, plus there is plenty of analog and digital inputs and outputs. The interface garnishes all this with an internal DSP for effect calculations and is priced at $1,495.
