Atomos Shinobi 7: Bigger and Brighter HDR Field Monitor

The Australian Atomos is best known for its external video recorder monitors of the Ninja and Shogun series, which enable higher quality video recordings with photo and video cameras. Incidentally, there has just been an update round for the Ninja, on the one hand in the form of the new improved “Ninja V+” model for 8K recordings and, on the other hand, as a firmware update for the previous “Ninja V” model. In addition to these combined devices, which combine recorder and video monitor as a mobile device, Atmos also offers pure video display and has now expanded this range of models with the 7-inch Shinobi 7 as an alternative to the Shinobi 5, which has been available for a long time. The new one is not only bigger but also shines in bright surroundings with a higher peak brightness of 2200 nits.

The Atomos Shinobi 7 (7-inch, Full HD) features a larger, brighter screen, taking the basics of the original Shinobi 5 to the next level. With a calibrated peak brightness of 2200 nits, the Shinobi 7 can be used in the brightest of environments without the need for a monitor screen to protect against sunlight or other bright ambient light or the need to convert the log inputs for HDR monitoring. With the large, bright, and light video display, the configuration options are numerous.

The Shinobi 7 is an ideal mini HDMI monitor for directors or focus pullers and also helpful for vloggers who present themselves in front of the camera. It can also be used as a program and/or preview display for video switchers for multi-camera streaming.

The screen of the Shinobi 7 shows a large dynamic range of more than 10 f-stops in real-time from log / PQ / HLG signals. Combined with Atomos’ HDR monitoring capabilities, the Shinobi 7 simplifies the complexities of log and HDR recording and helps replicate post-production workflows when it matters most – while recording. With adaptive cooling, reduced fan noise or the peak brightness of the display can be prioritized so that you can concentrate on filming.

In addition to the Log to HDR conversions, you can also use your custom 3D LUT to forward to other devices or the live feed. The SD card slot allows you to load up to eight custom LUTs at any time and instantly choose between them so that creative intent is maintained at all times.

The two battery slots allow the batteries to be easily hot-swapped during use so that you are never left without power. The dedicated lockable DC jack input enables connection to the main power supply on the set and can also be used with the optional DC-to-D-TAP cable for field power supply from V-Lock batteries.

With the new analysis function, you can now simultaneously show what is being recorded and display it as a waveform, as a histogram, and as a vectorscope, thus ensuring complete control over the image.

With the Shinobi 7 video monitor, users can control their compatible cameras via the Shinobi 7’s intuitive touchscreen, which gives them quick access to the most important camera functions. You can concentrate on the image and make dynamic adjustments to aperture, white balance, shutter angle, and ND. With the optional Atomos USB-C to serial cable, support for the Z Cam E2 series camera is instantly available and allows direct control of all menu configurations. The additional USB and RJ45 control ports on the Shinobi 7 also provide support for future developments as more options for touchscreen camera control are added.

Price and availability

The Atomos Shinobi 7 HDMI MDR Video Monitor is scheduled for delivery in June 2021 for $699 and it is already up for pre-orders via the Bhphotovideo.com and Adorama.com websites.
