ASUS ROG Zephyrus G15 Review

Performance

With gaming laptops, users are definitely very interested in the performance and real power of a certain machine. However, is it true that specifications have to be impressive to attract you, right? And with the ASUS ROG Zephyrus G15, we believe that if you don’t need to see the actual experience, you’ll be very interested in it because its configuration is so attractive.

Specifically, the ASUS ROG Zephyrus G15 has the following hardware parameters:

  • Display: 15.6-inch screen, Full HD+ resolution, IPS panel, 144 Hz refresh rate
  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 4800HS
  • RAM: 16GB
  • Hard drive: 512GB PCle SSD
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660Ti 6GB GDDR6 Max-Q

We don’t know about you, but for us, the CPU and discrete graphics are two factors get us the most attention. It is plausible that when your budget is around $1200, you already have the choice of AMD Ryzen 7 4800HS chip which is a new processor recently launched in the first months of 2020. We have tried the CPU benchmark website to test the performance of this Ryzen R7 4800HS chip, the result is that this processor is 21 places behind the Intel Core i9-10980HK and only 1 point behind the Core i9-900KF.

It is better to roam around the country in times of this pandemic than to play some games at home, and we also evaluated the performance of the ROG Zephyrus G15 through practical experience for you. We have played all different game genres for you to have a different perspective, including Call Of Duty, CS: GO, DOTA 2, and League of Legends. The first is the Call Of Duty, one of the FPS games that are storming not only on the PC but also the Mobile version is also very interesting.

With the max setting and the FPS range from 70 to 95 FPS, we have had really interesting experiences on the Asus Zephyrus G15. Not only in terms of beautiful graphics but also the light effects, sound, or image stability is blended together, making every moment a true experience.

Next, there is another game called CS: GO, we find the FPS level is more stable and higher than Call Of Duty. With frame rates above 150 FPS and sometimes reaching nearly 200 FPS, the Asus Zephyrus G15 is probably the ideal choice for those who are passionate about shooting on PC.

In another development, the AMD R7 4800HS proves the better power when the DOTA 2 game handles well, so you guys feel free to use it. We personally feel that this new AMD R7 is a valuable card of AMD and also a worthwhile processor in the segment.

The last game we experienced was League of Legends to evaluate the performance of the Asus Zephyrus G15. Some people may not know the game, but many weapons will be picked up here when mentioning the League of Legends. Rest assured, AMD Ryzen 7 easily wins and controls the League of Legends, providing the full experience in fighting every single stage or team’s difficulties.

If you use Zephyrus G15 to rank, your job is just to stabilize the mind and choose the skill, and processing of graphics or frames, leave the Zephyrus G15 to worry.

Those experiences were worthy and come not only from powerful CPUs but also with the help of discrete graphics NVIDIA GeForce Max-Q. Although this is not a new graphics card, in terms of graphics processing, the GTX 1660 Ti 6GB GDDR6 Max-Q is not a bad choice in the price segment. However, this discrete card also causes some adverse effects, namely heat dissipation. We will say more at the end of the review.

We used this laptop for quite a long time (obviously over a week) and spent a lot of time designing and playing games. We appreciate the Zephyrus G15’s ability to handle the game, but for some reason, after 5 or 6 days of play, the device suddenly began to see some jerks.

In addition, while playing the game, we also saw a phenomenon of lag in the graphic, although knowing that the machine’s CPU is very desirable, do not force it more, but don’t force it either, lest its “exhaustion” is dangerous! Nothing is perfect in this world.

We also did not forget to experience some online software to evaluate the performance of the Asus ROG Zephyrus G15. First, we used GeekBench 5, one of the most reputable and reliable software for both PC and mobile. Surprisingly, in the CPU test, this single-core machine achieved more than 5,000 points (namely 5,008 points) and multi-core reached more than 27,000 points (namely 27,111 points). This is an impressive number. Not only that, but we also tested the performance of the Zephyrus G15 with GeekBench and received a beautiful and large number: 181,188 points.

In addition to GeekBench 5, we also use other software 3DMark to measure the performance of the ROG Zephyrus G15. This software is also available on Mobile and we use it very often to measure phone performance thanks to its high reliability. After a period of waiting, 3DMark gave an average score of 5,343 points in the 3Dmark Time Spy test. However, a closer would allow the Ryzen 7 4800HS CPUs to reach an impressive score of 7,868 points and overwhelming the other CPUs in the segment.

Besides the powerful and expected CPU, Asus Zephyrus G15 is also attractive to technology circles when owning an SSD up to 1 TB. Oh, forget to tell you that the version that we reviewed is the maximum version (with 16GB RAM), while the market version will be 512 GB SSD and 8 GB RAM. Returning to the hard drive on its version gives ASUS a plus point. We used the familiar software Crystal DiskMark to measure the read/write speed of this hard drive and surprisingly, this application has a read speed of 1,671 MB/s, the write speed is also the same as 1,671 MB/s.

A satisfactory result for a gaming laptop, but do you know why you give ASUS a valuable point. This is because ASUS is paying more and more attention to its users and you will see it clearly when looking at the specifications of ASUS ROG Zephyrus G15. This is a gaming laptop, which can help you conquer hot FPS games on your PC but can turn it into a useful tool for creating and creating graphics. Not simply born for gamers, but Zephyrus G15 is also a great help, helping you to easily design on Photoshop, Lightroom, and more.

And yet, Optitex and AutoCAD are probably two of the familiar software of the design people. Do you think that Zephyrus G15 can download and use this software smoothly? Don’t worry, we are confident that Zephyrus G15 will not disappoint you thanks to SSD up to 1TB and even read and write speeds above 1,600 MB/s.

In addition, battery life is also one of the factors that users often take care of. We have used the BatteryMon software to find that, the battery life that Zephyrus G15 can achieve is nearly 2 hours and 30 minutes. With a gaming laptop, this is not a remarkable number, so remember to always carry the charger with you when going out.

Oh, forget, when playing games, you must plug in. Because now Zephyrus G15 will switch to performance mode to increase performance, improve speed and heat dissipation to bring a true gaming experience.

Design

Belonging to the PC world of ROG Zephyrus, the ASUS ROG Zephyrus G15 also inherits both the masculine and powerful aesthetic features of PCs. The laptop has a delicate back processing, with continuous stripes that look like it is milled, turning very well. We will still see the ROG logo on the right side of the back (if viewed from the back).

There are still familiar black tone, squared corners that have contributed to making the laptop more brave and thorny. This design is inherently familiar, we just hope that ASUS will bring more innovations in the future, to help users can easily distinguish by eyes rather than the parameters.

The ASUS ROG Zephyrus G15 is still finished in sturdy metal material to enhance the exterior of the product. However, the device still has two very familiar errors that are heavy and easily leave fingerprints. Not only Zephyrus G15, but the majority of gaming products are heavy and bulky. This is unavoidable because these machines are like monsters when having too many modern machines inside, so if you want to buy a gaming laptop, you have to accept heavy machines.

We also like the Zephyrus G15, but when our hands are sweaty, our fingerprints are left on the device which is very painful and the device looks completely inferior. Because of that, if you want to buy this laptop, remember to clean it regularly to keep it beautiful.

ASUS ROG Zephyrus G15 uses the keyboard as its predecessors, with a flat chiclet design and 1.4mm key travel. The good thing is that the space for using the keys is quite airy, the distance of the buttons is wide, making the operation easier and less touching. We have no bias against the keyboard of this Zephyrus G15, but what about you guys?

It will also have a backlight on the bottom, allowing you to use the laptop in many different environments easily. However, you cannot change the color of the key light and we only have a white LED light. We also regret it.

The touchpad is not to worry because the surface is very smooth and not hissing, but few people buy a gaming laptop and use the touchpad. Well, just use a separate mouse to experience better and handle the task, entertainment more efficiently.

Regarding connectivity, the Asus Zephyrus G15 is fully integrated with various ports to help you connect devices more conveniently, serving the game, studying, and working in the best way possible. We appreciate this point of gaming laptops and that’s why we pay a lot of attention to this product line, while many business/office laptops are cut down on many important ports at present.

On the right side, you will see that the device has 2 USB ports, 1 locking port, and a heatsink (we will specify the heat sink at the end of the review). Meanwhile, on the left side, the laptop will have this power port near the middle of the side, with LAN ports, HDMI, USB, USB-C, and 3.5mm audio jack. We do not see the SD/microSD card slot on this laptop.

Finally, in terms of sound, the Zephyrus G15 has the same design as its predecessors, with the speaker positioned close to the edge of both sides when placing the speaker on the bottom of the laptop. So does the sound on this laptop really good as expected? Although speakers are often not mentioned on gaming laptops, this is one of the factors that make games more interesting. You understand that and ASUS understands it.

Therefore, the company has equipped the device with 2x1W Speakers with Smart AMP technology. We feel the sound of the device is warm, the bass is deep, loud, and enough to bring a clear and true sound experience. At the same time, thanks to being placed on the back, the speaker will create a surround sound phenomenon and help you listen to music in every corner of the room.

Display

As for the screen, ASUS ROG Zephyrus G15 is equipped with a large 15.6-inch panel with Full HD+ resolution, surrounded by 6.2mm thin bezels that give an aspect ratio of up to 81% compared to the body of the machine. The feeling of open space and yet, by combining an IPS panel with a wide viewing angle, this display is the ideal choice for viewing photos and multimedia contents.

In addition, the screen also has a refresh rate of 144 Hz allowing it to play at true high FPS speeds, while the response time between two gray levels of 3 ms ensures clear graphics and sharp images. The brightness and color display took off at a decent level.

Some of our colleagues used to design graphics and make videos using this laptop, at that time they felt that although this screen is not perfect, still adjusted and brings quite realistic colors. How can we demand a high-end display for post-production work on a gaming laptop that costs about $1200? If you want this stuff, then it is necessary for you to buy a laptop specializing in graphics for yourself.

Heatsink

As we mentioned above, the heatsink is at the back of the keyboard and part of the right side of the device. The heat release direction will be in two directions: horizontal (air from the right edge) and vertical (if air escapes from behind the keyboard).

It is obvious that integrating multiple heatsinks. Because this is a gaming laptop and ASUS is looking for ways to improve CPU/GPU performance and among them is to increase the ability to cool the hardware.

We have measured this laptop’s radiator through reputable Furmark software and found that the average temperature falls in the range of 75° C (plugged in). As per our point of view, this is a fairly high level of heat, indicating that the laptop’s cooling system is not really effective to help ensure peace of mind.

However, the palm rest and keyboard part of the laptop is not hot, so it won’t affect the daily user experience too much. So we think you’ll be less impressed by the cooling system of the ASUS ROG Zephyrus G15.

But to be more secure, you should use the tasks scientifically, leave the laptop idle when not needed and limit continuous use for a long time. This not only helps to relax your device but also helps to reduce our eyes tired from working too much.

Final line

Over the past few years, we have seen the continued growth of ASUS as it consistently produces a wide variety of product lines, especially focusing on graphics and gaming laptops. If the graphics laptop is more modern with many advanced technologies (two screens for example), the gaming laptop has no change in design. However, the internal configuration is getting stronger and surpassing many of its competitors’ high-end products, such as ASUS Zephyrus G15.

It is not only one of the most valuable gaming laptops in the segment, but also a key card of ASUS on the technology chessboard. The pricing starts from $1,299.99 via the Bhphotovideo.com and Amazon.com online shops. Although this is not a perfect gaming laptop, it is a complete version.
