Taiwanese brand advertises the 300 Hz display of its extremely popular Asus ROG Strix SCAR 15 2022 gaming laptop as “the world’s fastest panel”, while 2022 Intel’s Core i9-12900H is at work as a 14-core CPU in the high-end notebook or AMD’s Ryzen 9 6900HX, each hand in hand with Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 3080.
Asus’ ROG Strix series is very popular in the gaming upper class, and if you look at our tests, for example on the predecessor ROG Strix 17 (REVIEW), it quickly becomes clear why: the fastest display, well-thought-out cooling for maximum performance, a mechanical keyboard and high GPU TDPs with a MUX switch, while very good battery life and fast charging via USB-C help with occasional mobility – often a weak point in gaming laptops.
The new generation of Asus ROG Strix SCAR 15 gaming notebook presented at CES 2022 picks up exactly there: the 15-inch models continue to have the fastest FHD 300 Hz and QHD 165 Hz displays, at a 3ms response time with Adaptive Sync, Dolby Vision HDR, and a MUX switch. There is also Intel’s Core i9-12900H (14 cores), Nvidia’s RTX 3080 Ti with an increased 150 watt TGP (previously 130 watts), and up to 64 GB of DDR5-4800 RAM. A four-speaker system with Dolby Atmos Virtual Surround is responsible for the sound.
In addition, there is a PCIe 4.0 SSD with a capacity of up to 2 TB with double the 7 GB/s bandwidth, a 90 Wh battery with 100-watt fast charging via USB-C, Wi-Fi 6E, 2.5 GBit LAN, Thunderbolt 4, Dolby Atmos, Intelligent Cooling and RGB lighting for the keyboard and other areas: Aura Sync Light Bar, Sync logo and Sync Bezel Glow.
Displays continue to feature a 16:9 aspect ratio this year, unlike Asus’ Zephyrus lineup, which has switched to 16:10 for 2022. Asus also doesn’t install its “Nebula” mini LED displays with 1000 nits here. Whether a mechanical keyboard or AMD is included again is not clear from the sparse press material, while earlier leaks point to an AMD version.
ROG Strix G15 and G17 are other high-end gaming notebooks that sit just below Asus’ Strix SCAR lineup. The differences are that mechanical keyboards are not used here, but this also results in a quieter typing noise. In most aspects, however, the models are pretty much the same, and this year the ROG Strix G-Series is even closer:
An AMD-based Asus notebook is now getting a MUX switch for the first time, which should lead to significant performance advantages when gaming. In addition, the display options are the same here, while the rest of the data transmitted by Asus are completely identical, apart from the built-in Ryzen 9 6900HX AMD CPU.
