Apple Studio Display starts with 5K resolution, six speakers, and A13 Bionic

Apple introduced a new display that’s significantly cheaper than the Pro Display XDR and offers a whole range of exciting features, including an Apple A13 Bionic, six speakers, and three USB-C ports with Power Delivery.

Along with the brand new Mac Studio, Apple also unveiled a 27-inch diagonal Studio Display with full 5K resolution, i.e. 5,120 x 2,880 pixels at a pixel density of 218 PPI. According to Apple, the DCI-P3 color space can be fully displayed. The Apple screen achieves a brightness of 600 nits, since Apple does not use a mini-LED backlight, higher peak brightness is not possible for displaying HDR content.

Apple relies on an anti-reflective coating, similar to the MacBook Pro. If you want to see even fewer reflections, you can get a surface made of nano-textured glass for an additional charge. The monitor Apple connects to any Mac with a Thunderbolt 3 port, and MacBooks can be charged at up to 96 watts. There are three USB-C ports (10 Gbit/s) on the back, which can be used to connect accessories.

The Studio Display has an Apple A13 Bionic, the same ARM chip that is already known from the iPhone 11. This chip is mainly used for two functions: it processes videos and photos recorded by the integrated 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera, as well as the data required for the loudspeakers and microphones. Because the Studio Display supports voice commands via “Hey Siri” through a ring of three microphones, the six integrated speakers support Apple’s virtual surround sound called Spatial Audio.
