400GB SanDisk Extreme UHS-I microSDXC Memory Card Announced at MWC 2018

Western Digital at MWC 2018 presented the 400GB Sandisk Extreme UHS-I microSDXC card, the fastest microSD card ever on the market, at least according to what the company says in its press release.

In addition to offering a capacity of 400GB, the new SanDisk UHS-I microSDXC memory card offers a transfer rate of 160MB/s or 50% faster than the microSD UHS-I that the manufacturer currently has in a catalog. These performances are made possible thanks to the use of the proprietary Western Digital technology, a feature that certainly will not go unnoticed, like the A2 specification support.

However, Western Digital does not stop and announces to be working on the development of the first memory cards with a PCI-E interface, addressed to next-generation high-end devices.

“Consumers expect an increasingly better mobile experience, and with our 3D NAND technology, we are pushing the boundaries of innovation to enable them to create and enjoy more rich content on their devices. Our expertise in flash memory and microSD card electronics enables us to achieve unmatched performance. The breakthrough SanDisk microSD card is evidence of Western Digital’s commitment to delivering more advanced solutions that enable data to thrive,” said Jim Welsh, senior vice president and general manager, Client Solutions, Western Digital.

We are not just talking about smartphones, but also about tablets and other top range mobile devices, where having high transfer-rate values will be essential to manage high-definition content: super slow-motion video, RAW continuous shooting, acquisition, and 8K video playback. Thanks to the PCI-E Gen 3.0 specification, we could see memory cards capable of a peak transfer rate of 985MB/s.

At the moment we do not know when these memory cards will be available, while the new 400GB Sandisk Extreme UHS-I microSDXC card should reach the market in the coming weeks, placing itself obvious in the high-end segment.
