Sony Xperia 5 With 6.1-inch CinemaWide Display, 12MP Triple Rear Camera, SD855 Launched at IFA 2019

Take all the good as well as huge discount we have seen on Sony Xperia 1, insert a slightly less large battery and shrink everything, but absolutely everything, until you get the Sony Xperia 5. The direction taken at IFA 2019 is always the same, it has a 21:9 OLED display capable of keeping up with all the direct competition and a top-level hardware compartment, but Sony wanted to follow up the desires of the fans and realize what a couple of years ago we would have called a “Compact”.

The Sony Xperia 5 features a 6.1-inch CinemaWide display with FHD+ resolution, so much more normal than the 6.5-inch 4K mounted on the older one but still equipped with the X1 processor coming from by Bravia TVs. This means better ergonomics and device management, made as usual with Gorilla Glass 6 (on both sides) and metal for the frame. All well protected from water and atmosphere thanks to the IP68 certification.

Sony Xperia 5 Camera

Confirmed the Xperia 1 cameras sector with the three 12 Megapixel rear cameras and solutions adopted by the Alpha family, then Eye AF for eye-tracking and portraits always in focus and AF / EF tracking up to 10fps. The “Dual Photodiode” main image sensor should be the same, accompanied by a luminous lens f1.6 (26mm) and RAW background noise reduction for clear shots even in low light conditions.

Following are confirmed the 12MP wide-angle (16mm), with f2.4 aperture and 130° wide field of view, and the 2X Tele, with optical thrust equivalent to 52mm. Naturally, we do not expect substantial differences with respect to the excellent photographic performances already demonstrated by Xperia 1, the same is true for videos, achievable up to 4K at 60fps and in HDR. It also offers the Super Slow Motion at 960fps in Full HD.

Pre-installed the CineAlta application, so as to really put the aspiring filmmakers to the test and provide manual control instruments that would otherwise be impossible with the usual native camera applications. The Dolby Atmos stereo sound closes the multimedia compartment.

Sony Xperia 5 Battery and Power

No compromise in terms of computing capacity, Sony certainly did not skimp and integrated the Snapdragon 855 SoC complete with LTE X24 modem (Gigabit-class but not 5G) with 4×4 MIMO technology. All managed by the usual and appreciated Sony interface based on Android 9 Pie, we do not know yet when the next distribution will take place but the Japanese house has always been in the front row.

To underline the battery capacity of 3140mAh only, as usual for Sony that has never let go integrating much more capacious units. Obviously the company speaks of sufficient power to complete a whole day, we know that their devices are historically less energy-consuming but we will still have to pass to a direct test to understand the real potential. The doubt of a narrow battery remains and is legitimate.

Sony Xperia 5 will be available from October in four colors: Blue, Red, Black and Gray, we currently have no indications of the price dedicated to the US market.
