Sony DPT-RP1 E-paper Tablet with 13.3-inch Display Announced

Sony first introduced the e-paper FES Watch in 2014 and FES Watch U in 2016 on its own crowdfunding platform. Now, the company has introduced the new e-paper tablet called Sony DPT-RP1, which serves as an updated version of the previous DPT-S1 digital paper tablet with a similar huge price.

It grows the display resolution, new Sony e-paper tablet integrates a 13.3-inch display with a resolution of 1650 x 2220 pixels, compared with 1200 x 1600 of the previous model. Also a new design is now thinner, lighter, and faster than its predecessor; the company claims that the new device is roughly as thick as a stack of 30 pages of paper. The screen is a “non-slip” panel, which the company says will improve the experience of annotating documents with the included digital pen.

Originally, the Sony DPT-RP1 e paper writing tablet is only working with PDF files, but thanks to a new Digital Paper App for desktop platform, which can easily convert any websites and documents to PDF format and transfer them wirelessly to the tablet. The heart of the DPT-RP1 is Marvell IAP140 64-bit quad-core IoT Applications Processor paired with 16GB of native storage (11GB free), allowing you to store about 10,000 PDF files (an average size of 1MB per PDF), and battery life about 5.5 hours.

The Sony DTP-RP1 price is about 80,000 yen – approximately $719, and is expected to go on sale in Japan starting from 5, June 2017. So it’s not cheap in term of pricing, but represents an important step forward if you think that the previous model was launched at $1000. It is undoubtedly a niche product, which is aimed at specific target users who are interested in working with PDF files using a display, thanks to the e-paper technology.
