Sennheiser Momentum Wireless Noise Cancelling Headphones Review

About three or four years ago, most people did not like the Bluetooth headset so much because they were not able to provide long battery life, which was also the main reason for their dislike. But then, when Sony released the WH-1000XM3 Wireless Noise Cancelling Headphones, we felt that the idea of the people might be a bit daunting.

Up to now with Sennheiser Momentum Wireless, We feel that Wireless Noise Cancelling Headphones are increasingly threatening the traditional plug-and-play hi-end headphones. The price of the Momentum Wireless is around $400 which is not too when coming to its performance, sound quality and design.

Features

The first thing to evaluate, which is also the most important, is the Noise Cancelling of Momentum Wireless.

Momentum Wireless has the ability to filter noise in the mid and treble range very carefully, when anyone screams loudly or ambulances, motorbike horns, we can still pay a lot of attention with intensity, we find the high mid-range filter efficiency is better than the Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700. A bass noise cancelling is also good, maybe because the Sennheiser’s earpad is thicker and better so when wearing the feeling of fullness, more secretive.

Momentum Wireless earpads are very smooth, thick and ergonomics, the overall sound quality is not affected by wearing glasses because it is quite close to the face. In terms of sound performance, the Momentum Wireless has a good sound quality and is suitable for many types of music.

The headset automatically connects to a smartphone, tablet or laptop very quickly, it is very convenient when you need to switch devices continuously. What we still find a bit confusing and unsatisfying is that the row of buttons above are many so that is accidentally pressed many times or afraid of being pressed.

Design

The headband and earpad cover of the headset is made from genuine sheepskin leather, which is very comfortable to wear, and also luxurious. The earcups straps are molded from stainless steel with a simple and stylized extension/collapse design. The earcups can also be rotated slightly to the sides to squeeze more tightly into the ear, feels cool, but would not be ideal for those who sweat a lot.

If we talk about the exterior design, the Momentum Wireless is not much different from the previous Momentum model, maybe it is just on the surface of the keys on the right earcup rim. The plastic keys and sliders have now completely changed to the rubber material for a smooth click.

Pressing the Bluetooth pairing button once will activate the voice assistant, and when you fold the headset, it will turn off itself without the need to press a power button. Open the headset, it will turn on automatically, very fast and convenient. Momentum Wireless also knows how to play/stop music when you wear or remove headphones, as well as allow simultaneous connections from two sources.

Included accessories are a carrying case, 3.5mm cable, and USB-C charging cable. Accompanied by a case that is quite soft fabric, it is neither a cloth bag nor a rigid case. Also, plug the USB-C cable into a smartphone with USB-C or plug it into the laptop as a DAC.

Users can download the Sennheiser Smart Control app (available on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store) to set more details for Momentum Wireless. Provided features like EQ correction, voice assistants and noise cancelling activation (adjusting the amount of noise). Users can also adjust noise levels according to 3 modes: Anti-Pressure (when traveling), Anti-Wind and Maximum.

Noise Cancelling and Battery life

The Momentum Wireless Noise Cancelling can be judged fairly well, which is better than the WH-1000XM3, a little anti-bass, but better than the high range, such as baby cries and whistles, and obviously, Senhizer’s Noise Cancelling experience is better than Bose NC 700.

Momentum Wireless has a battery life of about 13 ~ 14 hours when noise cancelling is activated, and this number increases when you adjust the noise level to a lower level, so the maximum battery life is up to 17 hours. When the battery runs out in an emergency, users can still plug in the charger via USB-C and 10-minute fast charge will provide up to 1.5 hours of use. The app will display the remaining battery power of the headset, so you don’t have to worry about what to do. Holding the multitasking button on the headset for 2 seconds also gives you information about the remaining battery life.

Sennheiser Momentum Wireless supports both Bluetooth 5.0 and NFC connectivity, of course, your smartphone must also have NFC. Compatible codecs include AAC, aptX and aptX-LL. You can also use the 3.5mm cable that comes with an accessory for high music quality, unfortunately, this cable does not support voice mic or remote control.

Sound

Coming from Sennheiser, the sound quality of Momentum Wireless after hearing for 3 weeks has become calm and expanded to an open soundstage with the most attractive tone of all wireless noise cancelling headphones available on the market today.

Some audiophiles or a few people may find few unsatisfactory points, but for common users, Momentum Wireless will be able to fascinate them immediately. The point that is not satisfactory to us is in the treble, below we will talk more specifically later.

The bass range of this headset sounds very stimulating for almost all types of music today. The bass beat is smooth and extremely easy to hear and hold the ear as the upper-bass is pushed up slightly, so the force and dynamics are also noticeable. We listened to Shakira’s Undernatch Your Clothes, Maroon 5’s This Love, and a few techno tracks from Charlotte de Witte were really impressive.

The sound quality of the Momentum Wireless is in the direction of sweet and easy to listen, keep detailed and power of voices like Jennifer Warnes or Saxophone at a subtle and engaging level. This one’s not balanced: it has a rich, charismatic color in the middle and high bass.

Treble has a decent level of detail, which means it is still rich in details but to beat up the energy of high tones, it does not reach that level, it does not make hi-hat beats a startle. From 2.5kHz to 5kHz is softened in a gentle and comfortable, meaning that the intensity of this sound tends to attenuate when going up, we think it is 1dB. This is good for on-the-go headsets, such as with Momentum Wireless to better fit a variety of music, especially with poor recording or mid-treble.

The great strength of the new Momentum Wireless is the spacious and extremely comfortable music space to re-express great symphonies like the Firebird Suite by Stravinsky. The layers of musical instruments are well separated, space with the height and depth of the stage seem as you are sitting in the 3rd or 4th row and watching the orchestra playing. And yet, if you use it to listen to excellent live recordings like Nils Lofgren’s Big Tears Fall, you’ll find yourself sitting very close to the stage.

Microphone quality of Momentum Wireless can be ranked in a row, not too bad but nothing appreciable. The person who listens to the phone, on the other hand, will immediately know that you are talking with a headset because it will get a little muffled, and if you have a low voice, the voice will sound like you’re very far from the microphone.

Final line

With a price tag of $399.95, you may need to think a bit before deciding to buy the Sennheiser Momentum Wireless Noise Cancelling Headphones. However, finished with high-quality material, with a well-built appearance, made in Romania, with a very attractive sound. Perhaps not exaggerating, but the Momentum Wireless is one of the best Noise Cancelling Headphones worth buying today and you can grab it via Amazon and Bhphotovideo online stores.
