With its first External GPU for laptop, Lenovo offers an extremely interesting combination of decent performance, space for several SSDs, stylish design and an extremely attractive price.
For example, similar to Razer Core X ($399.99 on Amazon), Lenovo relies on a simple aluminum case that looks just as good in an office as it does in a modern gaming setup. As usual, it is connected via Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) so that the connected notebook can be charged directly with up to 100 watts.
Inside of the Lenovo Legion BoostStation there is space for an external video card that can be a maximum of 300 x 60 x 150 millimeters and that does not consume more power than the built-in 500-watt ATX power supply can deliver. Lenovo offers bundles with the various external video card, including an AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT, Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Ti or even a GeForce RTX 2080 Super. The graphics card can be replaced completely without tools.
The 8.5 kg Legion BoostStation offers space for two PCIe SSDs and a 3.5 inch hard drive. In addition, a USB hub with three ports (2 x USB 3.1 Gen 1 + 1 x USB 2.0) and an Ethernet port are integrated, so that the External GPU for laptop can be used directly as a small docking station.
The Lenovo Legion BoostStation will be available in time for the launch of the Legion Y740S gaming laptop without a graphics card during May. The case without a GPU costs $249.99 – a very attractive price point in terms of the features offered.
