Leica Q2 is the new generation high-end compact camera of the German company, which incorporates the lucky formula of the original Q enriching it with the latest technological developments in the sector. The design and philosophy remain substantially those but improves the datasheet: the sensor is a full-frame from 47.3MP – almost twice compared to the previous, from 24MP, while the processor is always the Maestro II series, but a more advanced model. The ISO range is slightly higher, from 50 to 50,000, and you can record 4K video at 24 or 30 FPS and 1080p up to 120 FPS.
The Q2 features the same impressive wide-angle prime Summilux 28mm f/1.7 ASPH. with f/1.7 aperture and optical stabilization. The added resolution also affords a series of unique Crop Modes, which simulate working with longer focal length lenses, including 35mm, 50mm, and 75mm fields of view.
The added resolution also enables unique digital zoom capabilities to simulate working with different focal length lenses: 30MP images can be created using a 35mm field of view, 15MP images with a 50mm field of view, and 7MP with a 75mm field of view. The electronic viewfinder is also new: the resolution remains 3.68 MP but is now based on OLED technology instead of the previous TFT LCD.
It has a lightweight magnesium alloy body is dust and moisture sealed (IP52-rated) for use in harsh environmental conditions. The layout of the buttons has also been reorganized. In particular, there is no longer the button dedicated to video recording and there is a new customizable button on the thumb wheel on the upper right edge.
Battery life has been improved by 30 percent compared to the original Leica Q; the battery capacity is 1,860mAh. There are no communication ports: everything is done via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth LE (another new feature: first there was only Wi-Fi). The weight remains relatively low: 734 grams with battery.
