HP Specter Folio 2-in-1 Convertible Laptop With Leather Wrapped Body Announced

The HP Spectre laptop series got a refreshment as the company announced the launch of the new HP Spectre Folio model. It might seem similar to one of the many 2-in-1 convertible laptops based on the Windows 10, but a more careful analysis highlights its build-quality.

Unlike most of the similar devices, the Spectre Folio made of the magnesium alloy is designed to attach itself to a leather structure that almost completely surrounds the device – the aluminum keyboard remains excluded, but not the area of the palm rest in which there is also the trackpad (made of glass).

The design effort also extends to the motherboard: it is small in size to make room for a large battery. The parent company declares a maximum estimated battery life of 18 hours. The interior of the body houses an eight-generation Intel Core i7 8500Y or i5 8200Y processor, 8GB of RAM and a 256GB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD. The 13.3-inch screen has an FHD resolution and uses Intel 1W panel technology that allows saving more power – it was presented at the Computex 2018. By the end of the year, a version with a 4K screen will also arrive. The screen is equipped with a touch interface and support for 4000 levels of pressure.

HP Specter Folio maintains the usual versatility of 2-in-1 convertible laptop: the mode of operation can switch from the tablet to the desktop and the various adjustments are made through a magnetic hinge mechanism. The company emphasizes that the device is designed to be disassembled, suggesting that the leather exterior can be disassembled and replaced – a fact that it cannot be overlooked as it is a material that is less resistant than metal and plastic.

The hardware equipment also includes a 1080p webcam with Windows Hello support, 2x Thunderbolt 3 ports, a USB 3.1 Type-C, and a USB 3.1 Type-A.

The price of the new HP Spectre Folio starts at $1,299 for the variant with a Core i5 processor and goes up to $1,399 for the Core i7 option. There is also an LTE variant with Intel Core i7 will cost $100 more. The new laptop will be available via the HP online store while the 4K display model and burgundy color model will be available at the end of this year.
