GoPro acquired Kolor Software: virtual reality technology

GoPro adds new ways to make an extreme video, even more with virtual reality. The company said Tuesday it has acquired French Kolor software firm. Terms of the deal, announced in the first quarter GoPro earnings results, but were not disclosed. “We are pleased to welcome Kolor for GoPro,” said by CEO Nicholas Woodman, GoPro in a statement. “GoPro devices and Kolor software will combine to deliver spectacular and highly affordable solutions to capture, create and share spherical content.” Imagine a moving version of Google Street View from the point of view of a climber, you can control by simply looking around. Combine that with a virtual reality headset, like Facebook, owned Oculus Rift, and you’ll have something that GoPro is hoping it’s more realistic look at anywhere.

GoPro is looking for ways to expand their businesses beyond just selling cameras for skiers, racers and other sports enthusiasts. GoPro equipped drones are often used for landscapes for real estate companies and movie sequences. Now, the company is investing in a spherical video to convey the feeling of being part of not only the extreme feats, but NFL games, live concerts and other events. The GoPro and Kolor to compete with much larger competitors. Facebook said in March it will support the spherical video on their News Feed, and plans to include them in the Oculus.
